It’s a hot, humid day in July on a construction jobsite. Next thing you know, you’re experiencing dizziness, confusion, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating and increased irritability. Those initial symptoms can quickly escalate to heavy sweating, nausea, headache and weakness. In as little as 10 to 15 minutes, a normal workday can turn into a crisis. Construction is not a climate-controlled environment, and when compounded by PPE, heavy machinery and concrete, jobsites can become dangerous “heat islands” during the summer months. In fact, construction workers are 13 times more likely to die from a heat-related illness than workers in other industries.

As the industry enters the peak of summer, it is important to address the high stakes of a silent killer like heat on a construction site.
What Should Construction Professionals Watch For?First, it is important to understand the difference between heat stress and heat strain. Heat stress refers to the external environmental conditions to which workers are exposed, including temperature, humidity, direct sunlight and radiant heat from equipment or surfaces. Heat strain, on the other hand, is the body’s physical response to those conditions. This can include elevated heart rate, excessive sweating, dehydration, dizziness, fatigue and reduced cognitive function. Monitoring both environmental conditions and worker response is critical to preventing heat-related illnesses.
Construction professionals should pay close attention to surface and radiant heat exposure during warmer months, especially when working with materials like steel or operating blacktop and asphalt machinery. These surfaces absorb and retain heat throughout the day, significantly increasing surrounding temperatures and placing additional stress on the body. Even when air temperatures appear manageable, radiant heat from equipment, pavement and metal surfaces can rapidly elevate body temperature and contribute to dehydration and fatigue.
Heat-related conditions can also create secondary safety risks on active job sites. Sweaty hands can reduce grip strength and increase the likelihood of dropped tools, slips or mishandling equipment. Fogged or sweat-covered safety glasses may obstruct visibility and contribute to line-of-fire incidents, in which workers are struck by moving equipment, materials or tools. As heat intensifies, small impairments in visibility, coordination and focus can quickly become serious safety hazards.
