MLS Commissioner Larry Berg Podcast Sporticast

Lorenzo Gordon

On the 576th Sporticast episode, hosts Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams discuss some of the biggest sports business stories of the week, including Larry Berg‘s appointment as the next MLS commissioner.

Berg, who is co-owner of LAFC, was awarded the job earlier this week after four rounds of votes among MLS owners gathered at league headquarters in New York City. He is a hybrid type of candidate, one with deep knowledge of the league and its structure, and a long-time professional in a different industry (private equity).

The hosts talk about Berg’s transition from all angles. They discuss what he said at his introduction, what MLS owners said privately about the process, and how he might approach the next few years. There are big to-dos on the horizon, such as a new labor deal and a new media set-up, but Berg appears to be most focused on roster construction and other measures that would improve the level of play on the field. They talk about what this process might mean for the NFL’s transition whenever Roger Goodell moves on, and also what might happen with Berg’s sale of his LAFC equity.

The close by talking about a pair of other big stories. The Dodgers traded for ace starter Tarik Skubal, a move that has further exacerbated the angst among some baseball owners, executives and fans that the sport’s economics are fundamentally broken. Also, on Wednesday LIV Golf announced it had a lead investor that could provide capital to keep the circuit in business, though it chose not to identify the investor or the terms.
