13U, 15U Astros bring home tournament titles

Two Mitchell Astros teams brought home championships from a couple of different tournaments over the Father’s Day weekend — the 13Us from an ‘AA’ tourney in Brantford, and the 15Us from the Steve Bitton memorial, an eight-team tournament in Listowel.

The Fuller Tools 13U OBA team opened some eyes in Brantford, showing once again the Astros from smalltown Mitchell can hang with the city folk. The club reeled off five straight wins to claim the championship. Two of those victories came in exciting walk-off fashion, including the final, a 6-5 triumph in nine innings over St. Thomas.

The first walk-off took place in their opening contest against their hosts from Brantford, keyed by Beckett Elligsen’s two-run double in the seventh inning in a 6-5 win. Aiden Crawford was sharp on the mound, allowing just one hit and zero runs over four innings while striking out five.  

Against Oakville, an 11-run second inning on six hits was more than enough to record a 21-3 mercy-rule victory as Owen Dietrich tripled and Riley Hayter and Myles Havens each doubled in the uprising. A five-run fourth put the game out of reach as Kane Douglas doubled, and Leo Furtney and Crawford both singled, allowing Havens to earn the win on the hill.

The next day, a 15-5 mercy rule win over Mississauga was sparked by Crawford’s two-run home run that set the tone in a three-run first. The Astros, trailing 4-3, scored seven runs on eight hits in the bottom of the third to build a 10-4 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The biggest blow was a two-run home run by Hayter, who drove in three for the game, while Nate Walt, Havens, Elligsen and Crawford all had two hits. Furtney picked up the pitching win while Liam Chessell stole four of the team’s six bases in the game. 

In the semifinal against Waterdown, Mitchell led 4-1, thanks to  the one-two punch of Hayter and Crawford as each drove in two runs in an eventual 6-5 victory. 

In the championship contest, which tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Douglas’s RBI single scored the winning run in walk-off fashion.

While Mitchell led 3-1 after three, the team needed Walt’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 4-4, setting the stage for extra innings. Down 5-4 in the top of the eighth using the international tiebreaker rule, Elligsen’s single tied the score once again in the bottom of the frame. Crawford toed the mound for Mitchell, allowing just five hits and three runs over 5-and-a-third innings, with key relief help from Havens and Chessell, who got the final two batters in the ninth to set the stage for Douglas’s heroics.

Crawford also collected two hits and two walks to earn tournament MVP honours.

The Sherman Plumbing 15U squad also went unbeaten to claim their title, including a stunning walk-off win in their third and final round-robin contest when they scored 13 runs in the bottom of the sixth and final inning to overcome an ugly 18-6 deficit and edge Alvinston 19-18. 

The Astros played with 10 players for the majority of the weekend until the final, and all chipped in for the tournament title, coach Heather Brown said. 

In the opening contest against Simcoe, Mason Hoegy was dominant on the mound and led the club to a 15-5 mercy-rule triumph, helping his cause with a pair of doubles. Ty Verberne doubled, singled twice and scored three runs from the lead-off spot. 

Next, against league rival St. Marys, Weston Bannon earned the pitching win with help from Cole Ulch. The team scored five runs in the first, keyed by a three-run triple by Hoegy, which set an early tone before capping the win with seven runs in the sixth in the 16-8 victory.

The roller-coaster contest with Alvinston essentially meant nothing for Mitchell since they were already advancing to the playoff round, no matter the result, and their early performance in the field and at bat proved it. Mitchell led 6-4 after four innings before Alvinston scored seven runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take an 18-6 lead, only to see the Astros string together 13 runs to walk off their opponents in the one-run victory. Liam Coyne drove in the winning run, his second hit of the inning, and third of the game. Luke Linton, Spencer Dick and Verberne all scored three runs. 

Against Beamsville in the semifinal, Parker Wolfe went the distance on the mound in an 18-4 mercy-rule rout. A 10-run outburst in the first inning was huge in the victory before six more runs in the second put the contest out of reach early. Verberne had an RBI triple while Cole Ulch and Hoegy added doubles. 

In the championship game against Simcoe once again, Verberne picked up the pitching win with relief from Thomas Schoonderwoerd in a 10-6 triumph. Three runs in each of the first two innings again set the tone for the contest, Verberne, Wolfe, Ulch and Hoegy collecting RBIs in the opening frame from the top four batters in the lineup.
