Muckdogs claim first PGCBL title in franchise history with rout of Utica

Jackson Inman drove in three runs and the Batavia Muckdogs pounded out 13 hits to win their first Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League championship, routing the Utica Blue Sox 13-1 Friday night at Dwyer Stadium.The win came in Batavia’s third trip to the PGCBL finals. The top-seeded Muckdogs, West Division regular-season champions for the fifth straight season and West playoff champions for the second consecutive year, ended a Cinderella run by Utica, which emerged from the East as the No. 3 seed after winning back-to-back road games to reach the championship series.It was the first meeting between two franchises each still searching for their first PGCBL title since 2015, and the first time since 2018 that a team broke through for its first championship.Batavia opened the scoring in the second inning when Cooper Romich hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score James Quintero.The Muckdogs extended the lead in the third as Inman drove in Jalen David with a single, and a two-run error allowed Inman and Braedon Reina to cross the plate. Reina added an RBI single in the fourth inning that pushed Batavia’s lead to 7-0.Batavia broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by Inman’s two-run double to right field. Inman finished 2-for-3 with a double and two walks.Utica struggled to capitalize on scoring chances, going 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The Blue Sox’s lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single to right field by Kevin Francella that scored RJ Thomae. Michael Flashner led Utica at the plate, going 3-for-5.Gavin Chandler earned the win for Batavia, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run while striking out five. Garrett Beaver and Eric Woodley closed out the game with 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Chandler was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.Michael Furst took the loss for Utica, allowing one run on two hits over two innings. The Blue Sox committed three errors, leading to three unearned runs for Batavia.David and Reina each finished with two hits and two runs scored for the Muckdogs, and Romich drove in two runs.The Muckdogs are the sixth different franchise to win a PGCBL championship in the league’s 15 seasons. The Newark Pilots won the league’s first title in 2011, the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs won in 2015 and 2017, and the Jamestown Jammers won in 2018 — the last team other than Amsterdam or Saugerties to claim the championship before Friday. Batavia lost in two games to Saugerties in last year’s finals, while Utica was making just its second championship appearance and its first since 2016.Head coach Joey Martinez reflected on the title after the game.“This was six years in the making. Robbie Nichols gave me the opportunity, the pleasure, and the blessing of this organization, and he let me run it the way I wanted to. But I am not who I am without these gentlemen behind me,” Martinez said.“I told Robbie during the preseason, ‘I don’t know what it is about this team this season, but it feels pretty special.’ Grant and I were talking about it all offseason, but we couldn’t quite put our finger on it until we got it done today,” Martinez said. “I have to build a culture and they have to believe in it — and they did. I am so proud of this organization. We frickin’ did it!”
