Spotify has rolled out a new feature called “User Notes,” allowing listeners to add custom annotations to tracks within their playlists.
The tool is designed to help users identify why specific songs were added to a collection, offering a way to document personal memories, track discovery details from events like vacations, or highlight meaningful moments tied to specific tracks.

The User Notes feature is currently available to both Free and Premium account holders aged 16 and older in select markets, with availability expanding gradually. To add a note, users must navigate to a playlist they created, tap the three-dot menu icon adjacent to the selected track, and choose the option to attach a note.

Annotations added to tracks are public and will be visible to anyone viewing that specific playlist. Each note displays the creator’s username along with a direct shortcut to their Spotify profile.
In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Spotify indicated that the feature aims to enhance user engagement and differentiate its service from competitors such as Apple Music and YouTube Music. The company highlighted that the integration of personal context alongside music discovery transforms standard playlists into more personalized, reflective spaces over time.
Alongside this release, Spotify also introduced a separate AI-powered feature focused on fitness tracking. The smart running mode curates audio playback by analyzing the user’s music preferences, running cadence, and different workout phases to automatically match track tempos to exercise intensity. Unlike User Notes, this feature is restricted exclusively to Spotify Premium subscribers in designated regions.
