REUTERS/Stringer/File PhotoAn attack on a cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz and a rebound in oil prices on Tuesday fueled doubts that the US-Iran war was nearing a resolution as Tehran rejected President Donald Trump’s statement that negotiations were underway.The Liberia-flagged bulk carrier was struck by an unidentified projectile late on Monday about 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Khasab, maritime reports said. The vessel suffered damage to the engine room, a blackout and a fire, forcing the crew to abandon ship. One seafarer was reported missing and no party immediately claimed responsibility.Brent crude rose nearly 3%, partially reversing Monday’s 7% slide after investors reassessed Trump’s upbeat account of diplomacy. Trump said on Monday that talks were taking place at Iran’s request and that they were Tehran’s “last chance” to reach an agreement. Iranian officials, however, denied that negotiations with Washington were underway, saying their contacts were limited to discussions with Oman over Hormuz.Meanwhile, Washington has limited military options to force Iran to relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz or abandon its nuclear program without widening the war.US planners remain divided over whether additional strikes on Iran’s civilian infrastructure would compel Tehran to make concessions. Recent intelligence assessments have questioned whether bombing could alter the calculations of Iran’s surviving leadership, which retains the ability to retaliate against Gulf energy facilities, shipping routes and US regional bases.More ambitious options carry even greater risks. A ground operation along Iran’s Hormuz coast or at Kharg Island could expose large numbers of US troops, while a prolonged air campaign could trigger broader regional escalation without delivering political capitulation.CENTCOM has explored unconventional pressure tactics and prepared plans for a two-week bombing campaign deep inside Iran. But the White House has withheld authorization, suggesting concern that further escalation may impose heavy costs without breaking Tehran’s control over its remaining strategic leverage. REUTERS/Shir Torem/File PhotoLebanon and Israel began on Tuesday their seventh round of US-sponsored direct talks in Rome, amid ongoing Israeli demolitions in the south of the country and Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm.The three-day talks will focus on advancing the trilateral framework agreement reached under US auspices, which calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese military and the removal of weapons and military infrastructure belonging to non-state armed groups, including Hezbollah.According to media reports, discussions will also address the expansion of pilot zones in south Lebanon, border issues, as well as reconstruction.The meeting is the second to be held in Rome, following an earlier round held on July 14 and 15. Social Media/via REUTERS Turkey urged Russia and Ukraine to safeguard civilian navigation in the Black Sea on Tuesday after a drone struck the Turkish-owned cargo ship Nadezhda near Russia’s Novorossiysk port, seriously injuring three crew members. The vessel was sailing toward Turkey’s northern port of Samsun when it was hit about 20 nautical miles off the Russian coast. All 22 crew members were evacuated to Russia while a fire continued to burn in the ship’s bow. No party has claimed responsibility. A judge ordered Salameh, 76, sent for heart and respiratory examinations, according to the state-run National News Agency. Salameh reportedly refused treatment and was ordered to remain hospitalized until the tests were completed. His lawyer described his condition as “extremely unstable,” while his doctor said Salameh was refusing food, water and medication and had dangerously high blood pressure. Salameh was detained Saturday after missing a court hearing over charges of embezzlement, illicit enrichment and money laundering filed by current Central Bank Governor Karim Souaid. Salameh, who led the bank from 1993 to 2023, is under investigation in Lebanon and Europe over alleged financial crimes. The national carrier will launch Damascus-Moscow flights on Aug. 16 and resume weekly services to Medina on Aug. 11. Direct flights to Amsterdam began July 2, marking the airline’s return to Europe after years of suspended operations.
