A Bengaluru-based content creator has urged the government to regularize fares on ride-hailing apps, claiming that they are becoming increasingly unaffordable. Tripti, who posts under the Instagram handle @curatedbytriptii, sparked a conversation on Uber, Rapido and Namma Yatri fares by highlighting her own experience.

In an Instagram post shared yesterday, Tripti said that she spent an hour waiting at Indiranagar metro station for a Rapido auto to accept her booking. She claimed that non driver accepted her booking despite offering a 70 pre-tip ride.

Ultimately, she had to pay double the normal fare just to get home.

“Getting out of control”

“Day by day it's getting worse, today I spent an hour at Indiranagar metro station waiting for a Rapido auto,” Tripti said in her Instagram post.

“No auto driver would accept it even with an extra tip of 70. I had to pay double of what I usually pay,” she claimed.

The Bengaluru-based creator asked how young professionals in their 20s, who may not have large salaries, are supposed to manage on a budget in the city. She urged Bengaluru authorities to regularise fares on ride-hailing services like Uber and Rapido.

“At this point someone really needs to regulate Rapido, Uber and all these other apps because it's literally getting out of control,” she said, asking: “How do you expect someone in their early 20s trying to manage life on a budget.”

“Please I urge the government and all the other concerned authorities to look into this, a very humble request,” she concluded.

Post sparks debate

The post drew mixed reactions on Instagram, where it has been viewed over 2 lakh times in the span of one day.

Some people in the comments section blamed the rising cost of ride-hailing services on Bengaluru’s autorickshaw union.

“Focusing on the wrong people, it's the auto unions that is causing this, not the apps. I would literally just use cab instead of auto out of spite because of this,” wrote one person.

“Bangalore is hellhole, people join here with 50 lakh package and end up spending 49.99 lakh within Bangalore itself,” another said.

Many claimed that booking a cab instead of an auto would cost the same.

“We can boycott autos and go for cabs which surprisingly cost the same in peak hours. Let’s not give into the monopoly!” a user suggested.

“There are times when cab is cheaper,” another agreed.
