Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) successfully carried out a multi-organ donation, saving three lives, after certifying the brain stem death of a 32-year-old man.

Rajan, a resident of Neyveli in Cuddalore district, was admitted to Jipmer on July 29 after sustaining severe head injuries in a road accident. Despite emergency care and comprehensive intensive care management by the multidisciplinary team at Jipmer, he suffered irreversible brain injury.

Following evaluation by the Brain Stem Death Certification Board and in accordance with the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994 (as amended), he was certified as brain stem dead.

With the consent of his family, the organs were donated. The donor’s liver and kidneys were allocated through the established organ allocation system, saving the lives of three patients with end-stage organ failure, while the two donated corneas will be used to restore vision to patients in need, Jipmer said.

Jipmer has appealed to the public to discuss organ donation with their families. Deceased organ donation remains one of the most significant ways to bridge the gap between demand and availability of organs for transplantation, the institute said.
