WELLS – Nancy Small, 96, formerly of Shapleigh, passed peacefully under hospice care at Avita of Wells on July 13, 2026.

Nancy was born in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. on April 19, 1930 to Dorothy and (Dutch) Morris Rechtweg. She met and married Ronald Small when she was just 19 years old. They resided on Long Island, N.Y., in Alfred, Maine before purchasing land on Square Pond in Shapleigh. There they built a cabin that later turned into a year-round home. Nancy and Ron raised their five children, Stephen, Cindi, Thomas, Andrew, and Amy.

Volunteer and service work were important to Nancy. She served as an election clerk for 40 years; she served on the rescue squad for 37 years, was on the budget and capital improvement committees. Nancy and Ron served on the local planning committee as well. Nancy was an avid reader and an expert knitter.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; and sisters Susan and Jane; and husband, Ron.

She leaves behind her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Community Center in Shapleigh, hosted by her son, Tom Small.
