Abby Trainor entered the 2026 season as one of the top scorers in Maine girls lacrosse.

By the end of the season, she truly set herself apart from the pack.

Not only did the Windham senior attack score 93 goals for the second straight season (along with 58 assists), but in a 23-3 win over Portland on June 2, Trainor became the first girls lacrosse player in Maine to reach 400 career points. Two days later, she was the first player to surpass 300 career goals when she scored 11 in a 21-10 win over Scarborough.

For her prolific 2026 campaign, Trainor has been chosen as the Varsity Maine Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year. It’s the second straight year she’s earned the honor.

Trainor finished her career with 438 points — 319 goals and 119 assists. Sitting alone as the top scorer in state history — which dates back to 1998 when the Maine Principals’ Association first sponsored lacrosse — is still a new feeling for Trainor.

“I don’t even know if I’ve even wrapped it around my head yet, sometimes,” she said. “The milestone of getting the points was really special to me. It shows that, not just me, but my team can do a really great job of putting the ball in my stick and that I can put the ball in their stick.”

Trainor, who began playing lacrosse in kindergarten, was one of a group of upperclassmen, along with midfielder Neve Ledbetter, who helped lead the Eagles to the program’s first Class A championship in 2025. Despite a much younger roster this spring, Windham reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Thornton Academy. The Eagles finished 14-3.

“She really worked hard (this spring) to elevate those around her,” said Windham coach Matt Perkins. “There was games where she had four to six assists, just really trying to get everyone involved, knowing to win you need more than one or two people.”

Trainor comes from an athletic family. Her father, Jeremy Trainor, was an All-American lacrosse standout for Oak Hill High School in Wales in the early 1990s. Her mother, Shannon, played field hockey at the University of Maine.

“We’re a really athlete-heavy family, but I think I put more expectations and goals on myself than my parents did,” Abby Trainor said. “If there was any pressure or stress on this journey, it came from myself, because I want to get better and be playing around the best kids I can.”

Trainor’s constant pursuit of excellence garnered her a second straight All-American selection by USA Lacrosse.

“She’s never satisfied as a player,” said Perkins, who also coaches Windham’s football team. “She continued to work and never be satisfied (during her career). Unfortunately, I’ve seen many good players, in football and lacrosse, get satisfied that go, ‘Whatever, I’m great, I don’t need to work at it anymore.’ She’s always had a drive that is incomparable, really.”

After establishing a new standard in Maine, Trainor will look to prove herself again at Division I Fairfield University in Connecticut.

“It’s a great opportunity to have a fresh start in lacrosse and work my way up throughout the years at Fairfield,” Trainor said. “Coming in as a freshman, really working and taking in all the advice I can from the upperclassmen and coaches, I think, is going to be really important.”
