August is supposed to be the dead month; the autumn wave is still weeks off, and GTA 6 doesn't land until November. That is not how this summer has gone.

Over the last five weeks a survival hit finally left early access, a thirteen-year-old MMO turned up on a new console, a Pokémon spin-off got its first paid expansion, and the studio behind Untitled Goose Game returned with the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far. Every pick below has a specific reason to be played right now. Some of them are flawed. All of them are currently eating our evenings.

10 Big Walk

House House's long-awaited follow-up to Untitled Goose Game is a co-op puzzle adventure you cannot play alone. Big Walk drops between two and twelve players onto an Australian island where proximity voice chat functions as the core mechanic; shout across a valley and nobody hears you.

Puzzles resize themselves depending on how many people turned up, too, so there's no worry about convincing a big group of friends to play with you! It's a magical experience, and absolutely worth sinking into for a few hours of a cosy evening.

9 Palworld

Two and a half years of early access ended in July, and Palworld came back swinging. Version 1.0 dropped the World Tree barrier that had taunted players since launch and added the floating island of Sunreach, reached with a new glider.

Mutations and an Awakening system arrived alongside a level cap of 80 and 72 additional Pals. The response was instant: 921,485 concurrent players on Steam, enough to put it back inside the platform's all-time top fifteen. Pocketpair has been explicit that 1.0 is a foundation rather than a finish line, and further content stays free, so there's really no excuse not to give this one a try.

8 Halo: Campaign Evolved

For the first time, a mainline Halo is playable on a PlayStation. Campaign Evolved remakes the original 2001 campaign with new cinematics and re-recorded dialogue, plus three prequel missions starring Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson.

Four-player online co-op and two-player splitscreen survive, with crossplay throughout, but competitive multiplayer does not, which is largely why reception has split so cleanly; some people are loving it, but others curse that it's not the remake they wanted. Both positions hold up. If you were an original Halo-er, though, this is something worth giving a shot.

7 Pokemon Pokopia

Pokopia arrived in March as the highest-rated Pokemon game on Metacritic, which says as much about the mainline series as it does about this one. You play a Ditto pretending to be human, rebuilding a withered world with Professor Tangrowth for company and borrowing moves from the Pokémon you befriend.

Last week it got its first paid expansion: Bubbly Basin opens an underwater area reached via Dive, an ability that arrived free for everyone. If you needed an excuse to get back into the game and its wonderfully compelling building mechanics, the new area filled with the best types of Pokemon (sue me, I'm biased) is more than enough.

6 Mistfall Hunter

An extraction shooter with almost no shooting in it? Mistfall Hunter drops teams of three into a dark fantasy map to loot and brawl, then escape before the timer expires, with six classes built around weapon stances rather than guns.

Die to a monster and you can recover your body. Die to another player and it's all gone. It cleared 40,000 concurrent players on Steam after launching, and it's on Game Pass, so the cost of curiosity is practically nothing.

5 Final Fantasy 14

Eorzea has a new front door! FF14 launched on Switch 2 this month, easily the most convenient the game has ever been to pick up. Read the small print first, because the Switch 2 version requires its own purchase and its own subscription even if you already pay for one elsewhere, with existing subscribers getting 50 percent off.

Patch 7.55 landed last month, bringing a fresh Occult Crescent foray and the capstone quests for Phantom weapons, and the Moonfire Faire returned today, with a fresh mount to get. September's 7.56 wraps up the Dawntrail story before Evercold arrives in January, so this is a sensible moment to catch up, if you've been waiting for a reason to head back in.

4 ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs

The cosy sleeper hit of the month, ReStory puts you behind the counter of a small electronics repair shop, disassembling and cleaning old hardware until it works again. Plenty of it is recognisable, including classic Atari kit and the sort of console that lived under a lot of childhood televisions.

A story runs underneath, carried by the characters who bring their broken things in, and a light management layer covers the shop's finances as your skills improve. The lo-fi soundtrack is perhaps one of the best things to mention, though.

3 Beast Of Reincarnation

Japan in the year 4026 has been swallowed by the blight, a corruption that turns people and machines alike into monsters called Nushi. Emma is a Sealer who carries the affliction herself, which is precisely why she can weaponise it, hauling plants out of the ground to cross ravines and pin things in place.

Game Freak describes this as a one-person, one-dog action RPG, the dog being Koo, a blighted stray who never leaves her side. Combat is built on parrying but splices in pseudo-turn-based commands, so fights alternate between reading an attack and choosing a response. Between expeditions you head back to a ship, where you can talk to the pilot or wash the dog.

2 Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced

Edward Kenway's Caribbean has been rebuilt on the current Anvil engine, with ray-traced light doing obvious work on the water. The shape of it is unchanged, and naval combat and boarding still feed into on-foot infiltration of colonial ports.

Most of what's new is in the writing: Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet both get expanded storylines, and Caroline Scott has a considerably larger role than before. Three officers now join Kenway as part of the main narrative. There are fresh shanties for the crew to sing, and you can now keep pets aboard the Jackdaw, which is pretty adorable.

1 Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls

In this fighter, all four of your Marvel characters share a single health bar, so damage taken by any of them drains the same pool. Matches open as a 2v2 with a point character and one assist, and the other two unlock mid-fight through triggers like Wall Breaks, which punt the brawl into a different section of the stage.

Lose a round and your reinforcements arrive sooner, making the comeback mechanic part of the structure. The twenty-strong roster splits into five squads, so Peni Parker's SP//dr drones end up on the same team sheet as Captain America's ricocheting shield. Skill inputs are simplified, and Link Attack combos chain without the notation most tag fighters demand, keeping things on the accessible side.
