In 2026, we live in the worst kind of memory crisis that the consumer market has ever faced. Some people call it the RAMmageddon, and others call it the RAMpocalypse. Whichever way you want to call it, one thing is set: shortages created by massive demand in the AI and data center segment have led to a severe hike in prices across all memory segments.

This came at a time when memory speeds were seeing rapid updates. We saw speeds surge past 9000 MT/s, and some kits were hitting close to 10,000 MT/s. We saw the launch of CUDIMMs and CQDIMMs, plus capacities that pushed 2-DIMM platforms to 256 GB. But these are unobtanium these days. Even entry-level kits are out of reach.

AMD decided to do something different, knowing that the memory crisis won't go away anytime soon. They introduced a new standard for their EXPO technology called ULL, or Ultra-Low Latency. With its partners, the EXPO ULL tech delivers DDR5 kits with tighter timings that help CPUs gain additional performance. These kits were said to be available at around the same price points as regular EXPO kits. So today, we will be testing one of our first EXPO ULL kits, the G.Skill Trident Z5 NEOX.

G.Skill Trident Z5 NEOX RGB DDR5-6000 32 GB Memory Kit Specifications

The G.Skill Trident Z5 NEOX RGB memory kit retains the premium design and build quality that is known from the brand. We have tested many G.Skill memory kits over the years, and the Trident Z series remains one of the nicest-looking modules on the market.

For this particular testing, G.Skill sent us its Trident Z5 NEOX "F5-6000A3636F16GX2-TZ5NXRK" 32 GB (16 GB x 2) kit, which is rated at 6000 MT/s. The memory kit consists of dual 16 GB DIMMs, which make up a total of 32 GB in capacity. Following are the full specifications of the kit I'll be testing.

  • Series: Trident Z5 NEOX
  • Module Type: 288 Pin Unbuffered DIMM On-Die ECC
  • Capacity: 16GBx2
  • Frequency: 6000 Mbps
  • Data Transfer Bandwidth: 48.000 MB/s (PC5 48000)
  • Dimensions: 44mm height
  • Latency: CL36-36-36-76
  • Tested Voltage: 1.35V
  • Heat Spreader: High-Quality Aluminum Heatsink

The memory kit has a tested latency spec of CL36, and the timings are 36-36-36-76 for this specific kit. The voltage set at reference is 1.35V, and the memory kit comes in an unbuffered package with a non-ECC (On-Die Error Correction) design.

The memory kit is fully compliant with AMD EXPO (ULL) and Intel's XMP standards. To enable EXPO ULL profiles, you need to use the latest AGESA 1.3.0.1b Path A or newer firmware. Memory compatibility differs from motherboard to motherboard, so make sure that your board is high-end and rated to support high-clock-speed memory sticks.

As for detailed specs, there are two EXPO profiles that the NEOX kit comes with. The first offers CL36-36-36-36-96-132 timings, while the second offers CL36-36-36-36-76-112 timings. The two profiles loaded instantly on our test X670E platform, which was running the latest BIOS. Another thing to note is that the modules are based on Samsung's B-Die.

Outside the package, the G.Skill Trident Z5 NEOX RGB series offers a very aggressive & premium look with a high-end heat spreader. The design choice that G.Skill has gone with is very eye-catching and will look great even without the RGB LEDs.

G.Skill provided us with their matte-colored Trident Z5 NEOX RGB memory kit. The memory also comes in all-black and all-white flavors.

G.Skill experimented a lot with its diffuser system on the previous generation DDR4 Tridents. The new Tridents come in both RGB and Non-RGB flavors, but even without the LEDs, their design looks very premium, and the heat spreader and the multi-sided curve at the top really stand out from the rest of the DDR5 offerings.

The frame of the memory DIMMs is of a high-class design that uses polished aluminum heat spreaders of either black, white, or matte.

The memory modules are bulky and pack a solid heatsink that delivers optimal thermal performance. The sides feature a large Trident Z5 NEOX RGB logo. The DRAMs are fully covered by this aluminum-shielded heatsink, so higher temperatures won't be an issue on these sticks.

Wccftech Memory Test Setup

For testing, I used the latest AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D on the Gigabyte X670E AORUS Extreme motherboard using the latest BIOS with the AGESA 1.3.0.1b Path A firmware, which supports EXPO ULL memory kits. We also used an RTX 5090 for our tests.

DDR5 Memory Kit Performance Tests

I have separated the performance tests into two sections. The first section consists of synthetic and general workload tests, while the second section focuses on gaming performance and how different games are affected by higher-clocked memory sticks.

Gaming Performance Tests

Gaming applications generally don't see huge gains with different memory kits, but DDR5 has enabled a huge gain in memory frequency, which can impact gaming performance. Moving from the stock 2133 Mbps (DDR4) to 6000+ Mbps can have a huge effect on performance, and the improved CAS timings on some of the high-end SKUs can result in better overall FPS and system responsiveness. This is especially true for AMD's Ryzen CPUs and 3D V-Cache offerings that do benefit a lot from tighter-timed DDR5 kits.

Conclusion - A Solid Standard That Is Buried Beneath Ridiculous Prices

Through our tests, we found EXPO ULL kits to offer a 4-5% improvement over the standard EXPO kits in games, and a much bigger improvement over JEDEC-shipped kits such as 4800 and 5600 MT/s specs. While this is an improvement, and G.Skill's NEOX RGB with Samsung B-Dies are great, they unfortunately come at a time when memory prices are getting out of control.

Two G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB RAM modules rest on a dark surface.

The kit we tested retails for $529, while the standard EXPO kit from G.Skill (NEO RGB) retails for $499. So not much of a difference there, but the price varies a lot as you go towards higher tiers, and that is true for all brands, not just G.Skill (You can read G.Skill's comment on EXPO ULL price points here). Furthermore, we should point out that even normal EXPO kits from G.Skill can be fine-tuned to reach these speeds. Sure, you are getting an out-of-the-box experience which is hassle-free, but experts can get tighter timings out of existing modules with ease.

Overall, I think the EXPO ULL DDR5 memory arrived way late. The standard should have been released last year when Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs were rolling out, and memory prices were still in control. The performance differences, although varying on a game-to-game basis, do show a lot of potential, and we will hope that prices return to normal so that more gamers and PC builders can get the most out of their PCs.
