Hanwha Aerospace will develop a ballistic correction fuze designed to improve the accuracy of the K9 self-propelled howitzer by about sixfold.
Hanwha Aerospace said August 14 that it was selected as the preferred bidder for the “Ballistic Correction Fuze System Development Project” for ammunition used by the K9 self-propelled howitzer. The project is valued at 164.2 billion won, with development targeted for completion by 2032.
The ballistic correction fuze is a component mounted on the front of a projectile that uses a global positioning system (GPS) after launch to adjust its flight trajectory. It reduces the impact error that increases as the firing range becomes longer, improving accuracy. Hanwha officially refers to the K9 as the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH).
Hanwha Aerospace expects the ballistic correction fuze to reduce the impact error range of existing K9 ammunition to about one-sixth of its current level. The technology would enable precision strikes against long-range targets with fewer rounds, potentially reducing ammunition consumption and stress on K9 gun barrels.
The new fuze can also be applied to existing 155-millimeter ammunition. Accuracy would be improved by replacing the fuze currently installed on existing ammunition with the ballistic correction fuze.
Hanwha Aerospace has developed related technologies since the mid-to-late 2000s, participating as a prototype and lead contractor in key technology projects led by the government to improve the precision of self-propelled artillery ammunition.
