NHN Cloud said August 13 it had verified the stable operation of Tibero Active Cluster (TAC) in a cloud environment based on multiple hypervisors and completed its deployment at the Daegu Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Cloud.

The verification strengthens the basis for providing both the flexibility and stability of cloud environments to critical public-sector information systems that require high availability, NHN Cloud said. The company plans to expand support for public systems requiring high availability following the technical verification and Daegu PPP deployment, while continuing technology cooperation that combines domestic database technology with cloud infrastructure.

Tibero Active Cluster (TAC) is a high-availability (HA) solution based on active-active clustering technology that operates multiple database servers simultaneously. Because multiple servers process workloads at the same time, another server can continue providing services if one server fails, enabling failover and minimizing service disruptions while maintaining service continuity. Tibero's technical documentation describes TAC as an active-active cluster that links multiple Tibero instances for a single database workload and automatically fails over to a functioning node when failures occur.

NHN Cloud said that to achieve the same level of high availability offered by TAC in an on-premises environment, the key is to distribute two virtual machines across different hypervisor nodes rather than running both on a single hypervisor. This creates a redundant TAC environment in which virtual machines on another hypervisor can continue operating without interruption even if one hypervisor fails, preserving TAC's inherent high availability and stability.

NHN Cloud conducted a proof of concept (PoC) jointly with TmaxTibero, the developer of Tibero TAC, to implement the multihypervisor-based TAC environment. It was the first case in which NHN Cloud collaborated with the developer to conduct a TAC PoC in a multihypervisor environment.

According to NHN Cloud, the two companies comprehensively tested key elements required to operate TAC, including availability, network performance and storage performance. Because multiple database servers need to communicate closely, network performance is particularly important. The companies therefore applied Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) technology to enable fast and stable communication between database servers in a virtualized environment.

After completing the main verification, NHN Cloud deployed Tibero TAC at the Daegu PPP Cloud in July. The company said the deployment of TAC in a cloud environment for a public system requiring high availability will allow the public sector to combine the flexibility of cloud infrastructure with the stability of TAC.

The Daegu PPP Cloud is a public-private cloud space established at the Daegu Center of the National Information Resources Service to promote the government's adoption of private-sector cloud services in the public sector. Major services, including the Government-wide Service Integrated Portal, the National Geographic Information Institute, the Central Veterans Hospital and the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, are hosted and operated on NHN Cloud's infrastructure.

NHN Cloud said that critical information systems requiring high service availability have traditionally used highly available database configurations in on-premises environments. Through the latest technical verification and deployment at the Daegu PPP Cloud, public institutions can now use a database operating environment that combines the flexible resource scalability of cloud infrastructure with the high availability of TAC, while reducing the need to build separate physical infrastructure.
