While the Tenstorrent Ascalon X is known as their high performance out-of-order RISC-V RVA23 CPU core for extreme performance over the H and S models, a new GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) patch today from Tenstorrent makes known a new Ascalon XG core.

This patch arriving on the GCC mailing list is the first time I've seen or heard of Ascalon XG and apparently a first for Google Search too. This is a new variant of Ascalon X and Tenstorrent engineers are working on getting the RISC-V CPU core support ready for upstreaming into the open-source GCC compiler. RISC-V's zvkng is a set of vector cryptographic extensions.

With dropping the crypto and reducing the throughput, it sounds like the Ascalon XG could end up being an export model for Tenstorrent to China or similar markets. And the patch does note, "the global version of Ascalon X" so would align if that global is in terms of non-US/worldwide.

So the Ascalon XG patch ends up being very similar to the existing GCC support for Ascalon X but without zvkng and thus leaving the capabilities of rva23s64, zfbfmin, zfh, zkr, zvbc, zvfbfmin, zvfbfwma, zvfh, zvl256b, smaia, smmpm, smnpm, smrnmi, smstateen, ssaia, ssstrict, and svadu. For targeting with RISC-V it uses the "tt-ascalon-xg" target identifier.
