Even for Pokemon fans, Pokemon Fishing Contest DS is likely a title they’ve never heard of.

Originally released in 2005, Pokemon Fishing Contest DS was a fishing mini-game distributed exclusively through DS Download Play. It could only be accessed at special events and Pokemon Center locations in Japan, where players downloaded it via local wireless. The game remained on the system only until the Nintendo DS was powered off. Distribution was limited to participating locations between May and August 2005.

Now, the game has unexpectedly resurfaced in a way few could have imagined. A German eBay user has listed what appears to be a Nintendo DS development cartridge containing files related to Pokemon Fishing Contest DS for €7,999 (roughly $9,000).

The cartridge itself may look unusual due to its larger size. Unlike standard Nintendo DS game cards, this is a development/test cartridge with a top section that extends out of the console, as these units were never intended for public use.

That said, there are still plenty of unanswered questions. It’s unclear how the seller obtained the cartridge, and there’s no confirmation that it contains a playable build of Pokemon Fishing Contest DS. It could instead house software used to communicate ranking data and collect players’ high scores during the original event.

The seller included the following statement in the listing:

This listing refers to the exact physical development/test cartridge shown in the photos,” the seller states. “It was acquired as part of a private lot, and no additional history or provenance documentation is available. The item is in working condition and, when tested on a retail Nintendo DS, boots to a Japanese-language screen indicating a score ranking communication program. Compatibility with the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS has not been confirmed. No additional functionality has been tested or is guaranteed. It is being sold strictly as a physical item, in its current condition

Regardless of what is actually stored on the cartridge, it’s fascinating to see something connected to one of Pokemon’s most obscure and seemingly lost pieces of software suddenly appear after more than two decades.
