Well, it works, at least.

After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech.

Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics.

Summary
  • SharpEmu boots Astro Playroom on a Steam Deck — it actually runs, which is impressive.
  • Performance is horrendous: a stable ~0.6 FPS, occasionally flirting with 1 FPS.
  • It's a cool proof of concept, showing that PS5 titles can boot on handhelds, even if it's rough.

Getting an emulator working for the first time on a piece of hardware is no small feat. The beginning may look quite rough, but despite how badly it performs, it's still a good proof of concept that at least something is possible.

I say this because someone has gotten a PS5 emulator running on their Steam Deck, and while it never breaks 1 FPS, it's still amazing that it even runs at all.

SharpEmu runs the PS5 title Astro Playroom on the Steam Deck at a stable 0.6 FPS Now just find out how to multiply that by 100, and we're set

As spotted by Tom's Hardware, this cool feat was presented to the internet by BrutalSam on X. The post credits someone named Ihc160 for recording the video, and while it appears they're from a Discord server we don't have access to, we can still glean what's happening from the X post itself.

First, this is SharpEmu running off a Steam Deck. SharpEmu is an experimental PS5 emulator, so the fact it even ran on a Steam Deck at all is an impressive feat. In Ihc160's video, they boot up the game Astro Playroom within the emulator, which doesn't run too smoothly, to say the least.

You can see it in motion (and I use that term generously) in the video above. No, that stuttering isn't your internet having issues; that really is a PS5 title running at a stable 0.6 FPS on Valve's handheld. Sometimes it gets oh-so-close to breaching the 1fps benchmark before tumbling back into the lower digits.

So, yes, not exactly playable, but definitely impressive. I'm not sure if the Steam Deck is up to the challenge of smoothly emulating a PS5 game, but it'd be cool if it did happen.
