70-year-old man slain in Ogontz shooting, person in custody, police say

A man is in custody, officials said, after a 70-year-old man was killed in a shooting that happened in Philadelphia’s Ogontz section early Friday.
According to police, officers responded to the 5900 block of Ogontz Avenue at about 8:29 a.m. on Friday to find a 70-year-old man who had been shot.

This victim, police said, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced at about 8:46 a.m.
A man was taken into custody at the scene, as well, officials said.

Police did not immediately provide further information on this incident but, officials said, an investigation is ongoing.
NBC10 is working to learn more.
According to police statistics, as of Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, there were 111 reported homicides in Philadelphia so far this year.
This is down by about 20% from the same time in 2025, police statistics show.
