Delta Goodrem has divided viewers after taking centre stage during the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in Glasgow.

The Australian singer performed a medley of her biggest hits at the Hydro as the curtain came down on 10 days of competition.

Goodrem opened at the piano with Born to Try before moving through Sitting on Top of the World, Eclipse, Lost Without You and Wings.

She also joined Scottish singer Cammy Barnes for a rendition of John Farnham's You're the Voice.

However, some viewers questioned why the 41-year-old received more stage time than Scottish performers including Simple Minds, Sandi Thom, Bemz and Elephant Sessions.

'Should have a Scottish/English singer,' one viewer wrote.

Another posted: 'Should have been a Scottish artist, nothing against Delta, but the Australian government gave up on hosting it, which was a disgrace.' 

A third added: 'Should have got someone from Glasgow, or England at least.'

Another viewer wrote: 'As a Kiwi I couldn't understand why Delta (whom I do like) was the first entertainer—surely Scotland should have been the one.' 

Other fans defended Goodrem and questioned the criticism surrounding her appearance.

'She sang three songs ... and people are angry over it?' one wrote.

'I might also add, she was just doing what they asked her to do, pretty sure she didn't plan the ceremony.'

Another said: 'Great to have an entertainer of her calibre close out the games. Are Australians taking over the title of the world's biggest whingers?'

A third posted: 'Aren't you happy it was an Australian who sang three songs I thought it was nice of them to ask a wonderful singer like Delta to perform in the closing ceremony.'

Another praised her duet with Barnes, writing: 'Her rendition of Your the Voice with the Scottish singer then the bagpipes- perfect'

Goodrem’s inclusion acknowledged Australia’s connection to the Games, which were originally scheduled to be held across regional Victoria. 

Glasgow stepped in after the Victorian government withdrew as host and delivered the scaled-back event within 18 months.

The performance also marked 20 years since Goodrem sang Together We Are One at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006. She later appeared at the Gold Coast Games in 2018.

Ahead of the ceremony, Goodrem said she was honoured to represent Australia again.

'It's always an enormous privilege to represent Australia,' she said.

'The Commonwealth Games have such a strong connection to our country, and, of course, these Games were originally associated with Victoria, so I feel very proud to carry a little piece of Australia with me to Glasgow.

'After representing Australia at Eurovision this year, it's incredibly special to once again stand on an international stage and celebrate the spirit, heart and unity of our country.'

Goodrem also revealed that most of her ancestors were Scottish and her father's family had moved from Scotland to Bendigo in Victoria.

'Glasgow audiences are incredible. I'm coming back Glasgow next year starting my world tour here warm, passionate and great sing alongs,' she said.

'I began my first European headline tour in Glasgow in 2023, which was such a special night, and performing at Stirling Castle in 2024 with Shania Twain was unforgettable.'

Australia finished on top of the medal table with 171 medals, including 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze.

Simple Minds closed the ceremony before fireworks lit up the River Clyde waterfront.

The Commonwealth Games baton was then handed to Ahmedabad, India, which will host the next Games in 2030.
