The Queen of daytime TV said it has been ‘heartwarming’ to see Madeline McCann’s brother compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

Lorraine Kelly made the comment as she went undercover on Monday, volunteering at Glasgow 2026.

She swapped the studio for the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) for some first hand experience as part of the army of volunteers, helping spectators and athletes find their way around the area.

Sitting atop a watchtower, the Glasgow-born television host welcomed crowds for a day of sporting action at the SEC before heading inside to point guests in the right direction to reach their events.

The 66-year-old, who was inundated with people wanting their photograph with the small screen icon, said: ‘I don’t know whether I’ve been a help or a hindrance, frankly, but I’ve loved it. I’ve loved every minute of it.’

Although Team Scotland already has a good tally of medals, Lorraine’s favourite moment so far has not been a podium one.

She explained the highlight for her has been watching Sean McCann, the younger brother of missing Madeline, swim for Scotland.

Lorraine said of the 21-year-old: ‘What I thought was a really heartwarming story was Madeline McCann’s little brother who was here, his parents were there supporting him.

‘It was lovely see them as a family and the headline not to be about the sad tragedy, it was about life going on and him doing so brilliantly. It’s wonderful. It must be so very hard to have to grow up in the shadow of that very difficult [event].’

Some of the most dramatic scenes so far in the 11-day long competition have come from the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where Scotland won its first medal of the Games with Duncan Scott’s gold in the 200m Individual medley.

Success for Team Scotland continued at the long-course pool, with golds for Faye Rogers and Angharad Evans.

The centre has also seen tears with world record holder Adam Ramsay-Peaty, who last year married Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Holy, left emotional after being disappointed in his bronze finish in the 100m breaststroke.

Donning the official volunteer’s uniform, Lorraine also thanked those who have given up their time to help make the 23rd instalment of the Commonwealth Games a success.

She was at the Games with Allwyn UK, operator of The National Lottery and the Games’ Official Volunteer Learning and Development partner.

The broadcaster shone a spotlight on the training behind the 4,000-strong army of helpers, known as Legends, taking part in this year’s Games. They’ve been supported by Allwyn UK’s Social Value Fund to ensure they are fully prepared and confident in their roles.

Lorraine said: ‘The volunteers are the very heart of it all, and it wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for them. They’re the face of it. As soon as you get here the first person you see is somebody dressed like me with a foam finger and a big smile on their face. It’s just terrific.’

As well as surprising event workers and helping as they checked in for the day and welcoming spectators, she also met Team Scotland’s netball team just hours ahead their game against Trinidad and Tobago.

She also recalled the opening ceremony when the King and Queen unexpectedly emerged from a Tardis after seemingly being flown there by actor Greg McHugh and Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy.

The latter has two Commonwealth titles to his name and is Scotland’s most successful Olympic cyclist of all time.

Lorraine said: ‘Along with the volunteers, obviously, he’s the symbol of these games.

‘He’s a man that shows you what you can achieve, what you can accomplish when your back’s against the wall, all the odds are against you, and he is amazing. I absolutely love him.’

‘With more than 4,000 volunteers taking on roles across the city, the scale of what they deliver is enormous - and that’s only possible because of the training and preparation Allwyn has helped provide.’
