Supernatural-themed series like Stranger Things and Wednesday are among Netflix's most well-known titles. Stranger Things, which debuted on the streaming service in 2016, blended Amblin-esque capers involving a group of young misfits with supernatural horrors inspired by Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, and others. Meanwhile, Wednesday modernized the Addams Family character of the same name, following the teenage protagonist as she uses her psychic abilities to solve supernatural murder mysteries. But with Stranger Things concluding its five-season run in 2025 and Wednesday's third season currently in production, Netflix has ordered a new, unearthly-leaning project it hopes will entice fans of its established hits.
Netflix announced its new series Sid & Zoey follows in the paranormal footsteps of those aforementioned titles. The genre-bending supernatural mystery, horror, and romance project comes from the mind of Jon Kasdan, who wrote on Willow, The First Time, and Solo: A Star Wars Movie. Kasdan will serve as the series' showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Joining him as executive producers are Bad Robot's J.J. Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich, as well as Blumhouse Atomic Monster's Jason Blum, Rob Hackett, and James Wan, best known as the creator of The Conjuring Universe and co-creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises. John Shiban, known for his work on The X-Files, Breaking Bad, and Ozark, will co-write the series with Kasdan.
Netflix describes Sid & Zoey as a "dark," "seductive," and "boundary-pushing" YA gothic romance and "fish-out-of-water tale." The show's official synopsis dives further into the "unapologetically strange" story's premise:
Over eight episodes, the series will follow Sid, a seductive, sophisticated, and amoral teenager from New York, as he's sent to live with a police chief and his family in the idyllic Mississippi town where his mother grew up. Among them is the chief's sharp-witted, punk-rock daughter, Zoey. Resisting their mutual attraction, Sid and Zoey find themselves drawn into a dark, hidden world beneath the town's picture-postcard facade — and a paranormal puzzle that may well get them killed (if they don't kill each other first). It's a fish-out-of-water tale focused on an unlikely pair with plenty of scares.
Shiban's involvement as co-writer is notable due to his previous work on other young adult-inspired projects, including Smallville, Supernatural, Legend of the Seeker, and The Vampire Diaries. His inclusion, along with the series' official synopsis, suggests that Sid & Zoey may cater to audiences who are drawn to angsty teen romance dramas and preternatural plots, but want darker and more sophisticated storytelling. The Blumhouse team joining the project as executive producers suggests the series will delve deeper into the horror genre. Meanwhile, Abrams, best known for co-creating Lost and co-writing and directing the first and third entries of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, brings a history of producing projects with overarching mysteries and non-linear storytelling.
Sid & Zoey does not have an official cast or release date yet, so fans will have to stay tuned for further updates.
