GUILTY PLEAS: Reba L. Wilson was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to two charges stemming from a 2024 incident in which she threatened an HVAC technician. Three other charges were dismissed in a plea bargain.

A 45-year-old woman will spend at least six years in prison in Indiana for using a gun to threaten an HVAC technician after refusing to pay a $70 fee after he diagnosed a problem with her clothes dryer.

In a case that’s more than two years old, Reba L. Wilson of Indianapolis pleaded guilty last month to charges of unlawful possession of a gun by a serious violent felon and intimidation with the use of a deadly weapon. In a plea agreement, three additional charges — pointing a gun at another person, criminal confinement of a person, and criminal recklessness — were dismissed, according to Marion County Superior Court records.

Superior Court Judge Charles F. Miller sentenced Wilson to 10 years in prison on the gun-possession charge and four years on the intimidation charge. The sentences are to run concurrently, and Wilson was given credit for the 456 days she spent in custody or home confinement since her initial arrest in the case.

Wilson can be released no earlier than October of 2032, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

“I hope God heals her and she gets the help she needs. I forgive her for what she’s done,” said technician Nate Baird, via text message, in response to a request for comment. Baird fled Wilson’s home in March 2024 after she threatened to kill him while holding a pistol.

As he ran through the back yard, he heard a shot, then “heard the bullet whizzing right by,” Baird said last fall.

He declined to comment on the sentencing. “I would like to move past this terrible day and wish not to speak further,” he said.

Baird, owner of Nate’s Appliance Repair and HVAC, had come to Wilson’s house to check on a problem with her dryer. She told him she wasn’t going to pay for a repair because the dryer was under warranty, Baird said, but he explained the warranty was with a different company.

Baird said he found the problem was a bad thermal fuse and told her he’d fix it for $120. She refused to pay, he said, and he prepared to leave. When she told him to put the dryer back together, he replied he’d be happy to for a $70 diagnostic fee, he said.

Wilson then blocked the door, and Baird saw she was holding a pistol, he said. She told him to fix the dryer, he said, and, using an expletive, threatened to kill him if he didn’t.

Baird said he returned to the dryer, then bolted through the back door. Police later arrested Wilson, and media reports said they found a shell casing on the dryer and a pistol under a couch.

She was released on bond, subject to home detention and electronic monitoring, but was rearrested last October for violating terms of her release. Wilson has been in custody since then.

Wilson has a prior criminal record that includes charges of fraud, forgery, theft, and identify deception, according to the state’s corrections department.
