Huawei has launched an international version of its flagship Mate 80 Pro and a new smartwatch, as it pushes for a comeback outside of China.

The launch in Madrid marks the first time Huawei has marketed a flagship smartphone internationally since the Mate 50 in 2022.

The company has overcome crippling US sanctions that cut off its access to US technology, forcing it to develop in-house processors and a self-developed operating system.

Huawei’s own HarmonyOS powers its products in China, but the new international devices use Huawei’s EMUI, based on the open-source version of Android, known as the Android Open Source Project, or AOSP.

Since Huawei is barred from using Google technology, the devices replace Google Mobile Services with Huawei’s equivalent services, handling functions such as authentication and AI assistance.

Like the Chinese version, the Mate 80 Pro uses Huawei’s domestically produced Kirin 9030 Pro processor.

At the Madrid event, the company also debuted an international version of its Huawei Watch GT Runner 2, aimed at professional and amateur runners.

The watch includes a wheelchair mode for wheelchair-using athletes, which offers precise push tracking.

Huawei in December released international versions of its Nova 14 handset and double-hinged Mate X7 folding phone.

The company attained the No. 1 sales spot in mainland China for the full year 2025, IDC said in January, narrowly beating Apple with 16.4 percent of the market over Apple’s 16.2 percent.

It was the first time Huawei held the top spot in China for an entire year since 2020.
