Sonic the Hedgehog is joining Fortnite as part of the battle royale's upcoming gaming-themed season.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, which is named Override, is expected to feature collaborations with a string of classic video game franchises, including Tetris, Kingdom Hearts and Persona.

Today, we got our first look at gameplay, via a clip shared by the Sonic the Hedgehog social media account. Footage shows an area themed around Sonic's iconic Green Hill Zone, and Peely the banana dashing through it, Sonic-style. Presumably there will be some new Sonic movement item, granting super speed.

Eagle-eyed Fortnite fans will spot that the teaser opens with the logo for the Imagined Order (IO) — the game's original bad guys, led by Geno, Fortnite's overall Big Bad who's now playing a key part in the game's storyline (voiced by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Ben Starr). The suggestion here is that the IO are hacking reality and inserting video game characters into Fortnite's universe... for reasons that are yet to become clear.

Fortnite is currently wrapping up its very enjoyable Runners season which has focused on the collection of Pokémon-like Sprites. These little creatures have proven so popular that Epic Games has now confirmed that the mechanic is sticking around, with a new generation of Sprites on the way. All Sprites collected this season, meanwhile, will be saved in a Sprite Garden for each player — which sounds absolutely nothing like a Chao Garden, honest.

The next season of Fortnite is expected to arrive on August 19. We'll likely get confirmation of more big video game crossovers in the days to come (and potentially word of Kingdom Hearts at D23 Expo this weekend.)
