This new browser extension is your hero. Shopping for basic electronics, home utilities, or everyday accessories on Amazon has increasingly turned into an exercise in visual fatigue. A simple query for a charging block, a desk fan, or a laptop stand no longer just surfaces a handful of familiar options. Instead, consumers are regularly forced to wade through an endless parade of identical-looking listings sold under interchangeable, seemingly randomized strings of capitalized letters.

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

To help online shoppers reduce this visual noise, software developer Josh Pigford has released a new, lightweight browser extension called Knockoff. Currently available for Google Chrome and slated to arrive soon on Mozilla Firefox, the tool is engineered to automatically identify and filter out trademark-squat pseudo-brands from your Amazon search results.

How It Works: Spotting Linguistic Signatures Locally

Unlike traditional shopping plug-ins that slow down your browser by cross-referencing your search history with external servers, Knockoff processes everything locally on your device. It requires no account creation, no tracking permissions, and zero server round trips while you browse.

The browser extension functions by running a localized name-heuristics engine that scores listings based on the specific linguistic patterns common to mass-produced, trademark-squat brands. The detector evaluates search pages for specific red flags, such as all-caps strings between five and nine characters long, unusually low vowel-to-consonant ratios, unpronounceable consonant clusters, and random internal capitalization.

To ensure legitimate, established brands that happen to use short or capitalized names are not inadvertently caught in the filter, Knockoff includes a built-in veto allowlist consisting of over 5,000 recognized companies. This preserves visibility for reputable, long-standing brands while flagging or isolating the randomly generated pseudo-brands that have zero established presence or company infrastructure behind them.

Tailored Controls: Dim, Label, or Hide

The extension provides a high degree of user control, allowing shoppers to decide exactly how aggressive the algorithm should be when cleaning up a page. Rather than completely censoring the interface by default, Knockoff offers three main display settings:

  • Labeling: Places a clear, distinct visual badge next to the manufacturer’s name on the search grid or directly on the product detail page to highlight its status.
  • Dimming: Fades and desaturates the flagged product tile, making it easy to skim past the listing while allowing you to temporarily restore its full visibility simply by hovering your mouse cursor over it.
  • Hiding: Removes the suspicious listings entirely from the active search page, replacing them with a minimal, floating counter pill that shows exactly how many items were filtered out and offers a one-click reveal option if you want to inspect them.

Every badge generated by the extension is fully interactive. If the heuristic engine accidentally flags a newer brand you know and trust, a single click adds them permanently to your personal allowlist. Conversely, you can manually block any repetitive factory brand with a click or report misclassifications to a community database to help refine the bundled filtering rules for everyone else.

Open-Source Integrity and Availability

Because Knockoff operates with a completely open-source architecture, tech-savvy users can view the entire underlying JavaScript codebase, track the scoring mechanics, and contribute fixes or brand list updates directly through the project’s public GitHub repository.

The utility is currently live and free to download for Chrome users, with the official Firefox port tracking closely behind. If you are looking to simplify your online product research by reducing the noise of randomly generated factory brands, you can explore the extension and its features directly at the link below.
