There have been plenty of TV shows set in hospitals, but none have had as legendary a run as Grey's Anatomy. Fans have been watching the show for 22 seasons on ABC (and streaming with a Hulu subscription), and they are gearing up for Season 23 this fall. The show's official Instagram recently posted a photo of Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang, and fans are freaking out about her possible return after all these years.

Cristina Yang is one of the most popular Grey's Anatomy characters ever. She's focused, brilliant, funny, and her relationship with Meredith is a TV friendship that's truly goals. Oh departed the series back in Season 10, and ever since then the fandom has been hoping she'd pop back up again. The discourse has heated back up since Grey's posted the following image of Cristina. Well, I'm invested. As a hardcore Grey's fan myself, I found it strange that the show's account would suddenly post this tribute to Sandra Oh's signature character after all this time. The caption reads "heavy on the Yang', which some folks took as a sign that she might finally be returning to the medical drama all these years later.

While Oh previously said she wasn't interested in reprising her role, that hasn't stopped the fandom from crossing their fingers and hoping to see the beloved cardiothoracic surgeon back. Some popular responses in the comments section of Grey's Anatomy's post read:

• Don’t go teasing us. You can’t post her without some form of context 😂 we need the tea.
• umm what's this supposed to mean?? If she came back I'd actually watch again lol 😂
• This is a sensitive subject.. don’t play with me 😭
• I have a feeling she may come back as head of cardio, just for a little bit, as there is no head of cardio at the moment
• Sensitive topic. If she’s not coming back, stop soft launching her to generate engagement.

Same though. Yang might be the best character in Grey's history, and that includes Ellen Pompeo's title character. So fans are freaking out about the idea of her returning, and are also warning the powers that be not to mess with our expectations. Is this simply a nostalgic post to drum up engagement, or could Sandra Oh actually be returning for a long-awaited guest appearance in Season 23? Only time will tell.

While Oh originally auditioned to play Bailey, she created a dynamic and iconic character as Yang. From her first introduction, Cristina's ambition was clear, as was her hard exterior and traumatic past. For ten years, we watched as she navigated her career and personal life, while also being Meredith's best friend and "person".

Sandra Oh joined the list of Grey's Anatomy actors who left the show back in Season 10, with that season's finale being her final appearance. In her last scene, she famously told Meredith that she was the sun, not McDreamy. Since then, she's appeared via text messages, and the back of her head was briefly shown during Derek's funeral.

Grey's Anatomy Season 23 is currently scheduled to begin Thursday, October 15, as part of the 2026 TV schedule. Only time will tell whether Oh actually appears, or if fans will end up rioting in the comments section of the above post.
