Atommash (part of the machine-building division of Rosatom - Atomenergomash) began manufacturing a set of steam generators for the fifth power unit of the Kudankulam NPP (India).

To date, the employees have completed the machining of the shells of the vessel and large nozzles, which are the parts of the steam generator. Welding work is underway on the shells of the steam generator vessel.

For a nuclear power plant in India, Atommash manufactured and shipped two sets of steam generators for the third and fourth units of the Kudankulam NPP.

The steam generator belongs to the products of the first class of safety. The diameter is more than 4 m, the length of the apparatus is about 15 meters. The weight of the equipment is 340 tons. The vessel of the steam generator is a horizontal cylindrical vessel with two elliptical heads, in the middle part of which there are headers for the supply and removal of the hot coolant. In the upper part of the vessel there is a steam space, in the lower part of the steam generator vessel there is a heat exchange surface, which consists of 11 000 stainless pipes. The pipes are 16 mm in diameter and 10 to 14 meters long. The ends of the pipes are fixed in two headers. The equipment of one power unit includes four steam generators.

NPP "Kudankulam" is a nuclear power plant with VVER-1000 power units located in the south of India, in the state of Tamil Nadu. The first power unit of the Kudankulam NPP has been operating steadily at the design power level of 1000 MW since February 2016. The second power unit was included in the national power grid of India on August 29, 2016. The third and fourth units will be commissioned in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The general framework agreement with Rosatom on the construction of the fifth and sixth units was signed in summer of 2017.
