Hilary Duff just experienced the ultimate working mom moment.

During her debut performance at Madison Square Garden, the 38-year-old singer shared an unexpected update with the audience. Just hours before she was set to take the stage for her first music tour in 18 years, her 5-year-old daughter, Mae, required an emergency hospital visit.

“We were in the ER this morning getting some stitches for my 5-year-old,” Duff told the cheering New York City crowd, making sure to clarify that her little girl was “fine.” 

“She’s fine, it’s all good, but it’s very ‘our family’ coded that I’d be playing my first night at MSG and also be in the emergency room getting my kid stitched up,” she joked. The proud mom also took a moment to praise her daughter directly from the stage, saying, “Mae Mae, you’re very brave.”

Duff shares Mae, 7-year-old Banks, and 2-year-old Townes with her husband, Matthew Koma, plus 14-year-old Luca from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie.

Bringing her family on the Lucky Me tour was a big priority, but it took some serious planning. She told People in April that she was very intentional about making sure her kids could join her on the road.

“I spent hours with my assistant [looking at] the tour schedule, being like, ‘Okay, I want them here for this stretch. They can go home these days,’” she said. “It’s been a lot of logistics that can seriously bend a brain, but it’s going to be an adventure.”

While her younger children are mesmerized by her concerts, Duff’s oldest said he’s not handing out “cool points” for her fame. In a May interview with daytime talk show host Jennifer Hudson, Duff said her little ones are her No. 1 fan, but her teenager takes a bit more convincing.

“My little ones are my number one fan. They want to be at all the shows. It’s so cute,” she said. “When my confetti cannons go off, they can’t believe what they’re seeing. It’s really cute. Or if I do like a wardrobe change and I come out in something a little more like [done] up, they’ll be mind blown.”

“But my teenager, I think he doesn’t think I’m totally embarrassing,” she continued. “I think it’s coming for me.”

Still, she gets a little validation when Luca’s friends go out of their way to talk to her at school because they recognize her from TikTok. He might not be totally impressed by her pop star status just yet, but pulling off a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on the same day as a childhood emergency room trip is definitely something to be proud of.
