Santa Monica Studio used a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to finally pin down when players can step into the afterlife of the gods. God of War: Laufey will arrive on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. 

Head of creative Cory Barlog delivered the news in person, alongside game director Ariel Lawrence, closing out months of speculation that followed the game’s initial reveal at PlayStation’s State of Play showcase in June.

However, the game is confirmed to ship on physical disc as well as digitally, and it carries extra weight given Sony’s recent announcement that it plans to wind down disc production starting in 2028 — news that triggered pushback from fans wary of an all-digital future.

God of War: Laufey shifts the series’ focus away from Kratos for the first time, centering instead on Faye, also known as Laufey, his late wife. The story picks up right after the ending of 2018’s God of War, with Faye waking unexpectedly in a mysterious realm called the Everywhen after her funeral pyre burns. 

The first real look at gameplay came via a 20-minute segment at the June State of Play, opening with Kratos and Atreus performing Faye’s funeral rites before cutting to her awakening in the Everywhen.

Kratos does resurface briefly later, helping Faye during a stretch where she’s imprisoned, though it’s unclear how much more he’ll appear given that he’s simultaneously occupied with the events of Ragnarök.

Reaction in the room was enthusiastic, even though the broader fan response to the project since its initial reveal has been more mixed, as some players have pushed back on the simpler combat shown in Laufey’s opening section, and on the choice to sideline Kratos as the lead. Series creator David Jaffe has also been an outspoken critic of the spin-off’s direction.

The panel’s biggest surprise came when Barlog confirmed that Santa Monica Studio is already developing a new Kratos-led God of War title, and that it will connect directly to the story told in Laufey. 

It’s the clearest signal yet that Barlog’s earlier assurances that Kratos would return to the spotlight are being acted on, and it gives skeptical fans a concrete reason to treat Laufey as connective tissue in the wider saga rather than a standalone detour.

The announcements suggest Santa Monica has a fairly clear roadmap stretching well into the back half of the decade: a February 2027 launch for Laufey, a faster and more precision-driven combat identity to distinguish it from prior entries, and a next chapter already lined up to bring Kratos back to center stage. So, are you ready to step into the afterlife as Faye, or are you waiting for Kratos’s grand return in the next epic?
