Sony officially announced plans on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, to discontinue production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Moving forward, the company will shift entirely to a digital game distribution framework. It signals the end of an era for physical console media.

According to the company, new PlayStation titles for the PS5 and potentially the PS6 will be available only digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers once the transition is complete. However, as reported by Gadgets360, the existing titles, as well as those launching before January 2028, are not affected by this change and will continue to be offered on Blu-ray discs.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company wrote in its announcement.

Sony said the decision reflects how most players already buy and play games today. Furthermore, the decision is a response to “shifting trends in consumer preference,” with digital sales significantly outweighing physical. 

According to Sony’s financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, digital downloads accounted for 85% of full game software sales on PS4 and PS5, while physical copies accounted for the remaining 15%. In the previous year, physical game distribution accounted for just three percent of PlayStation’s revenue, and the PS5 Pro’s 2024 launch without a disc drive was a clear indication of Sony’s future direction. 

The decline of physical games has also been reflected in retail, with stores that once relied heavily on physical discs continuing to shrink as more players buy online. According to reports from TechCrunch, GameStop has closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years.

Sony further clarified that this digital-only rule applies strictly to brand new games released after the January 2028 deadline. Any brand-new game launching on PlayStation hardware after January 2028 will be distributed exclusively as a digital download via the PlayStation Store or as digital code cards sold at retail storefronts.

This change does not affect legacy physical media. Any physical disc released prior to January 2028 will continue to work perfectly fine on existing disc-compatible hardware such as the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro disc drive attachment. 

However, it was not clarified how future hardware generations, such as a potential PlayStation 6, will handle older, backward-compatible discs released before the 2028 cutoff. 

The impact of this decision can be huge. The second-hand video game market would obviously take an enormous hit if people were no longer able to trade in their unwanted PS5 games. The retailers are also likely to experience negative effects. This decision has been linked with reduced manufacturing and distribution costs for both Sony and game publishers. The move is already beginning to take place:

• GTA 6: Rockstar Games recently confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled to launch this November, will not include a playable disc for the PS5, even though it will be sold as a physical edition. Instead, the buyers will receive a retail box containing a download code. 

• The PS6 Implication: Industry analysts point out that this effectively guarantees the highly anticipated PlayStation 6 will be a digital-only console, lacking any disc-drive architecture.

• Xbox One: Following Microsoft’s 2013 announcement that Xbox One would require periodic online authentication to access games, Sony famously published a short YouTube video. This underscored that physical games could be freely shared, lent, or resold without any restrictions.
• Nintendo: Nintendo, which remains the dominant force in physical game sales, seems to be nudging customers towards digital with comparatively lower prices and game key card cartridges that do not contain the full game.

The company has already announced that it will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for legacy platforms like the PS3 and the PS Vita globally by July 2027.

“We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,” Sony said in a press release. “PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.” 

While PC gaming went fully digital years ago via platforms like Steam, the console community has reacted with immense frustration. Once those stores close, players will not be able to purchase new digital content on those systems. Sony said that previously purchased games and content will remain available for download for the foreseeable future. This announcement further marks the definitive end of an era for video gaming.
