For eight years, playing Moss meant owning a VR headset. That changes on July 16.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic – the fantasy adventure combining the full stories of Moss and Moss: Book II – launches July 16, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. A Steam demo is available now, giving players their first taste of the non-VR experience ahead of launch.

Previously released as VR-exclusive titles, Moss and Moss: Book II were combined to be ported to non-VR platforms with updated visuals, performance improvements, and additional features. Every PS5 owner with a standard television and a DualSense controller can now play the complete Quill saga – no PSVR2 required.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic contains the full saga of protagonist Quill, a young mouse who fights to save the world from arcane forces, as depicted in the popular VR titles Moss and Moss: Book II. The game unites both critically acclaimed entries into a definitive experience, beautifully enhanced and reimagined for its debut on PlayStation 5 as a flat-screen title.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic is an emotional and atmospheric adventure set in the pages of a living storybook, brimming with myth and ancient magic. Players guide a tiny but determined hero on a heartfelt journey of challenge, courage, and connection – traversing a fallen kingdom, solving environmental puzzles woven into the landscape, and embarking on a timeless adventure.

The player-and-hero relationship sits at the heart of everything. Quill does not just follow commands – she looks to the player for guidance, protection, and trust at every step. That dynamic, which made the original VR games among the most emotionally resonant experiences on PSVR and PSVR2, has been thoughtfully reimagined for the flat-screen format.

This is not a straight port. The release adds new cutscenes, a Smart Follow camera system designed specifically for non-VR play, and includes all previously released Twilight Garden DLC. A new Skip Combat accessibility option has also been added — a meaningful inclusion for players who want to experience the story and puzzles without the combat sections. 

Enhanced visuals and an orchestral score by Jason Graves elevate the experience further, drawing players deeper into Quill’s world than the original VR releases allowed on their respective hardware.

Moss originally launched in February 2018 exclusively for PlayStation VR on PS4 – a critically celebrated debut that won over 160 awards and nominations and established Polyarc as one of VR’s most talented indie studios. A PS5 version arrived in February 2023, but it remained exclusive to PlayStation VR2. 

Moss: Book II followed in March 2022 for PS4 via PlayStation VR, with a PS5 version via PSVR2 arriving in February 2023. Both games were universally praised – but locked behind hardware that the majority of PS5 owners never purchased. 

With over 160 awards and nominations across both entries, Moss is one of the most celebrated modern indie adventure franchises. The Forgotten Relic is Polyarc’s answer to the question the community has been asking since 2018: when can players without a VR headset experience Quill’s story?

July 16, 2026, is the answer.

Moss: The Forgotten Relic will release on July 16, 2026, on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2. Players can wishlist the game on their respective platform storefronts now.

The Steam demo for Moss: The Forgotten Relic launched June 8 ahead of the game’s participation in Steam Next Fest, offering players their first opportunity to experience how the unique player-and-hero relationship has been reimagined for non-VR play.

PSVR2 launched in February 2023 at $549.99. Sales significantly underperformed Sony’s projections — the headset was discontinued for new production in early 2024. The majority of the PS5’s installed base of over 60 million units never owned a VR headset of any kind.

This release marks the series’ first non-VR version on PC and PS5, while also debuting on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and both Nintendo Switch consoles. For the overwhelming majority of PS5 owners, July 16 will be their first opportunity to experience one of the most award-winning indie franchises of the past decade – and they will experience it in its most complete and visually enhanced form yet.
