On International Women’s Day 2026, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) stands in solidarity with women in Somalia and across the world under the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.

Women journalists continue to play a critical role in informing the public, exposing injustices and strengthening the democratic values of freedom, equality and accountability. Yet many still face harassment, intimidation, discrimination and threats to their safety just for doing their journalistic jobs. These barriers must end.

NUSOJ calls for concrete action to end physical and digital violence against female journalists; protect their rights; ensure justice for violations committed against them; and create a media environment where women can work safely, with dignity, freely and with equal opportunity.

Women journalists in Somalia also continue to face abysmal working conditions that undermine their professional growth and safety. Many work without written contracts, fair pay, access to training or adequate protection in the field. The union urges news organisations and relevant authorities to take concrete steps to improve working conditions for female journalists by ensuring fair employment practices, equal opportunities, access to leadership positions, and safe workplaces free from violence, harassment and discrimination.

Women’s voices and leadership in journalism are essential to building and maintaining a free, independent, and inclusive media industry. Today, we honour the resilience and courage of female journalists who continue to report daily, despite personal and professional risks. Their work strengthens Somali society and defends the public’s right to information.

RIGHTS must be respected. JUSTICE must be delivered. ACTION must be taken. For all women journalists.
