Navee recently reached out and sent over their new flagship UT5 Ultra X scooter for me to check out. I’m not typically an “electric scooter guy,” though I’ve ridden a few in the past just trying them out down the street, but nothing compares to this. The UT5 Ultra X is a top-of-the-line machine that retails for an eye-watering $3,499 CAD.

Setting up the scooter is super easy. You just attach the top handle and tighten a few screws. You then download the Navee app, sign up (Apple or Google login supported), then pair the scooter to your phone. Right off the bat you’ll see a new firmware update for the scooter which installs fairly quickly.

First things first—this scooter is built like a tank and its gold and red colour scheme looks pretty slick. It weighs a hefty 90 pounds (41kg), but that heft translates to a ride that feels like a plush Cadillac. It is big, comfortable, and feels very stable. The acceleration from the dual motors feels like you are taking off in an electric car, as it can go from 0 to 20km/h in just 1.78 seconds. It can also handle a max 46% incline and in our tests in our hilly area, it handled steep hills with ease.

Safety and visibility are clear priorities here which is a good thing. The turn signals are super bright and visible from the front, rear, and side. The headlight includes a high-beam setting, and there is custom ambient lighting along the bottom of the frame for added style and visibility. You also get hydraulic brakes, internally routed cables, and traction control.

There’s also a built-in bell for pinging pedestrians plus a red horn that’s a bit more aggressive. The grocery hook is also a nice feature too.

The UT5 Ultra X also has some handy smart features. There is a built-in frame-mounted security lock and one of my favourite features is native Apple Find My support, so you can always track where the scooter is, without the need to hide an AirTag somewhere.

The Navee app allows you to customize settings like max speed and regenerative braking, and you can even set your phone as a digital key, letting the scooter unlock automatically as you walk up to it. All your essential info, such as speed, battery, and ride mode is shown on the clear 3.5-inch LED screen.

The ride comfort is really nice thanks to the adjustable rear dual hydraulic suspension. You can switch between a stiff setting for smooth city asphalt or a softer setting for rugged trails. The deck is wide enough to support a size 12 shoe comfortably with both feet side by side.

Range is impressive as well as you can get up to 120km of range if you stay at 15km/h, or 80km if you bump your speed up to 25km/h. When it is time to recharge, it is quick with the 10A fast charger, taking as little as two hours.

While the scooter has a max speed of 70km/h, I did not even attempt to hit that, as it’s pretty much suicidal. That is speed reserved for a closed course or open tarmac with full safety gear.

One thing to note is that the turning radius is somewhat limited, so you have to keep that in mind when navigating tight spots. Given its 90 pound weight, it can be a workout to push the scooter if it ever runs out of battery. This is a big machine designed for adults, not kids, and it makes you feel pretty safe and confident every time you ride.

Also, I would  like to see a future firmware update that would allow the front and rear lights to have a strobe flash mode, as I find that’s the best way to be seen during the day. Or even future lighting upgrades to have the rear brake light give off at least 100 to 200 lumens to be seen during bright sunlight, and to integrate full light bars all around.

If you’re looking for another Navee scooter that’s a bit more economical, we also got to try the ST3 Pro, which is priced at $958. It is lighter, but still feels very stable. The dual suspension is plush and it’s also equally speedy as the UT5 Ultra X when speed capped at 25 km/h, while it also has built in Apple Find My too. The range is lower at up to 75km based on your speed, while you also get turn signals on the handlebars and front/rear lights.
