The FDB research project ( http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/projects/FDB/ ), led by Dan Olteanu, is the recipient of an Amazon Web Services research grant in the amount of $10,287.
FDB (Factorised DataBases) addresses the problem of processing of large-scale relational data via compression. The next milestone in the project is developing distributed techniques for query processing and machine learning that exploit compact, factorised representation of data to mitigate network communication cost and offer horizontal scalability. The support from Amazon is essential as it will enable benchmarking of such distributed techniques.
