One in two Koreans predicts that South Korea’s national economic power will surpass Japan in 10 years. The perception that individual living standards are already higher in South Korea than in Japan is expanding.
According to the results of the ‘Koreans’ Perception of Japan’ survey conducted by Elim Net’s online survey platform Now & Survey on 1007 adults nationwide on Aug. 14, the response that the South Korean economy will surpass Japan in 10 years reached 51.9%. On the other hand, the response that Japan will have the upper hand stood at only 14.0%, showing a large gap.
When asked about current personal living standards, 37.2% responded that South Korea is higher. This is 13.9% points higher than the 23.3% who answered that Japan is higher. Regarding current national economic power, the most common response was ‘similar’ at 36.5%, while South Korean superiority (33.5%) and Japanese superiority (30.0%) interlocked within the margin of error.
South Korea’s strength was clearly evident in the competitiveness evaluation by industry. Out of the 13 sectors surveyed, South Korea was tallied to be ahead of Japan in 9 sectors. In particular, semiconductors recorded the highest score with 4.25 points, and South Korea’s competitiveness was also highly evaluated in the cultural content (4.07 points) and shipbuilding and marine (4.01 points) sectors.
On the other hand, the basic science and original technology sector remained at 2.69 points and was analyzed as the only survey item where Japan has the upper hand. In sectors such as advanced materials, parts, and equipment, precision machinery and robotics, and aerospace, the gap between the two countries was found to be not significant.
Separate from the economic competition structure between the two countries, a positive public opinion has formed regarding the necessity of cooperation. 70.0% of respondents agreed with the opinion that South Korea-Japan economic cooperation should be expanded. This is interpreted as a result reflecting public sentiment that values a practical economic partnership over past conflicts.
Meanwhile, 49.4% of respondents chose ‘economic growth’ as the greatest achievement South Korea has made since liberation. The globalization of K-content followed, receiving 31.0% of the choices. This survey was conducted to commemorate the 81st anniversary of liberation to confirm South Koreans’ perception of Japan and national pride.
