HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun and TerraPower Founder and Chairman Bill Gates met in Seoul to solidify a cooperative system for the commercialization of next-generation small modular reactors (SMR). This meeting marks the first time the top management gathered in one place since the ‘tripartite memorandum of understanding for cooperation on the next-generation Natrium reactor business’ signed by HD Hyundai, TerraPower, and Hyundai E&C in May.
The meeting, held in Seoul on August 14, was attended by Chairman Chung Ki-sun and Chairman Bill Gates, as well as TerraPower CEO Chris Levesque and Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-woo. They reviewed the progress of the business so far and engaged in in-depth discussions on multilateral cooperation measures to accelerate the commercialization of land-based reactors.
Chairman Chung Ki-sun expressed expectations that the commercialization of next-generation reactors could be accelerated based on a cooperative system encompassing technology, manufacturing, and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction). Chairman Chung emphasized, “Through independent technology development and collaboration with global companies, we will actively respond to the increasing demand for SMR power generation.”
HD Hyundai aims to establish a production system that supplies 2 to 3 main reactor components per year. To this end, the company plans to accelerate preemptive investments in production facilities prior to commercialization. Having already specified the scope of supply chain cooperation, HD Hyundai has been designated as the preferred bidder to manufacture and supply the core equipment for the main components of TerraPower’s Natrium reactors.
The cooperation among the three companies is based on a strict division of roles. TerraPower provides Natrium technology based on the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), HD Hyundai is in charge of manufacturing the main components, and Hyundai E&C handles the EPC. Starting with its investment in TerraPower in 2022, HD Hyundai has accumulated practical achievements, such as winning an order to manufacture a cylindrical reactor vessel in December 2024.
