South Korea’s money supply continued to expand for an eighth consecutive month in June, driven by a sharp increase in liquidity held by companies, while household funds shifted from monetary financial products into stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
According to the Bank of Korea’s “June 2026 Money and Liquidity” report released Aug. 14, broad money, or M2, averaged 4,213 trillion won in June, up 29.4 trillion won, or 0.7%, from the previous month. M2 has increased every month since November last year.
The increase was led by nonfinancial corporations. M2 held by nonfinancial companies jumped 45.7 trillion won in June, marking the largest monthly increase since the statistics began in October 2003. The increase was attributed mainly to inflows of export proceeds from semiconductor companies amid the artificial intelligence boom and an increase in funds held in deposits.
M2 held by other financial institutions also increased by 5.4 trillion won, contributing to the overall expansion in money supply.
Households and nonprofit organizations, by contrast, saw their M2 holdings decline by 19.8 trillion won, the largest drop since the statistics began. The figure surpassed the previous record decline of 19 trillion won recorded in May.
The decline was attributed to household funds moving from monetary financial products such as deposits and savings accounts into investment products including stocks and ETFs. Individual net purchases of domestic stocks increased to 52 trillion won in June from 42.6 trillion won in May.
Among financial products, money market funds, or MMFs, recorded the largest increase, rising by 7.3 trillion won. The increase was driven by nonfinancial corporations investing their short-term surplus funds in MMFs, with the monthly gain nearly tripling from 2.5 trillion won in May.
Time deposits and savings products with maturities of less than two years also increased by 7.1 trillion won, reversing a decline in the previous month, as corporate holdings rose. Money trusts with maturities of less than two years increased by 6.3 trillion won, also reflecting inflows of funds from semiconductor companies.
The pace of M2 growth has also been accelerating. M2 increased 6.0% in June from a year earlier, up from 4.3% in June last year, 4.7% in January and 5.5% in March. The growth rate, however, remained below the long-term average of 7.5% recorded between 2005 and 2025.
Other measures of liquidity also increased. Narrow money, or M1, averaged 1,402.9 trillion won in June, up 0.4% from the previous month. Financial institution liquidity, or Lf, averaged 6,368.7 trillion won, up 1.0%, while broad liquidity, or L, stood at 8,115.3 trillion won at the end of June, up 0.8% from the previous month.
