On the morning of Aug. 14, the domestic stock market started higher across the board, influenced by the easing of U.S. inflation burdens and the strength of tech stocks in the New York stock market. The July Producer Price Index (PPI) announced overnight in the New York stock market fell below market expectations, easing interest rate burdens. In addition, major indices, including the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, rode a warm breeze, passing the warmth on to domestic large-cap semiconductor stocks.

According to the Korea Exchange on this day, the KOSPI index opened at 6,995.67, surging 182.33 points (+2.68%) from the previous trading day. The index, which expanded its gains immediately after the opening, briefly broke through the 7,000 mark before taking a breather, repeatedly fluctuating around 6,966.22 as of 9:50 a.m.

The KOSDAQ index also opened at 868.07, up 6.70 points (+0.78%) from the previous trading day, and continues its upward trend, maintaining its gains in the mid-870 range.

Foreigners and Individuals ‘Joint Buying’ Vs. Institutions ‘Net Selling’

In the early KOSPI trading session, supply and demand show a trend where the joint buying of individuals and foreigners is driving the index up.

Foreign investors are maintaining a buying dominance of about 320 billion won (about $226 million) to 330 billion won, centered on semiconductors and large IT stocks.

Individual investors are also supporting the lower end of the index, recording a net buying trend of over 400 billion won in early trading.

On the other hand, institutional investors are stepping up to realize profits, releasing net selling volumes exceeding approximately 720 billion won.

Semiconductors and Automobiles Lead the Strength

Most of the top market capitalization stocks turned on the upward light. In particular, the rapid progress of representative semiconductor stocks, boosted by the favorable performance of U.S. tech stocks, stands out.

SK hynix is leading the broader market surge, jumping +5.84% on the back of gains in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and growing expectations of a recovery in the semiconductor industry. Although foreign investors are attempting to lock in gains by offloading roughly 295.6 billion won worth of shares, strong buying from both institutional and retail investors is easily absorbing the foreign sell-off and pushing the stock significantly higher.SK hynix is showing strength, rising +5.84%.

Samsung Electronics is showing strong momentum, rising +2.05% from the previous trading day, fueled by heavy buying from foreign investors early in the session. In terms of market flow, foreign investors are driving the stock's upward trajectory with net purchases of approximately 584.1 billion won, while institutional investors are adding to the buying pressure with net purchases of around 115.7 billion won. Conversely, retail investors appear to be taking profits early, recording net sales of over 119.6 billion won.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics, reflecting expectations of a recovery in demand for IT components, rose +4.86%, and Samsung Life Insurance, influenced by overall strength in financial stocks and dividend expectations, is showing an upward trend of +4.29%. SK Square is rising +3.67% as the revaluation of its semiconductor-related subsidiaries is reflected.

Amid the overall warmth of large IT and semiconductor stocks, Samsung Electronics preferred shares rose +3.35%, and Samsung Electronics common shares also rose +2.05% due to foreign buying, recording an upward trend in the 2% range.

Hyundai Motor, which saw an influx of automobile export momentum and active buying, is also surging +5.38%, appearing to lead the upward trend in early trading.

LG Energy Solution is rising +1.64%, joining the mood of a gradual rebound trend centered on large secondary battery stocks.

On the other hand, in the pharmaceutical and bio sectors, some profit-taking volumes are appearing, with Samsung Biologics showing a slightly weaker trend of -0.32%, and Hanwha Aerospace, which recently showed a short-term rapid upward trend, is taking a breather, showing a downward trend of -1.35%.

Won/Dollar Exchange Rate Fluctuates Around 1,417 Won Due to Weak Dollar

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won exchange rate against the dollar started lower, affected by the recovery of risk appetite and the weak dollar. The won-dollar exchange rate in early trading is finding stability around 1,417 won, down from the previous trading day’s closing price (1,416.1 won), acting as a positive factor for the stock market’s upward trend.

Stock market experts forecast that as the US inflation indicators raise expectations of an interest rate cut by the Fed, the preference for risky assets could be maintained for the time being. However, they advise that since there is a net selling trend by institutions in early trading and pressure from profit-taking volumes near the 7,000 mark, it is necessary to keep an eye on changes in supply and demand for individual stocks.
