A major upheaval is taking place in the global NAND flash market driven by China’s rapid advance. China’s Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) has risen to third place in terms of NAND flash shipments, following Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The company is in rapid pursuit, overtaking Kioxia and Micron.
According to the Memory and Storage Tracker for the second quarter of this year released by the global market research firm Counterpoint Research on Aug. 13, Samsung Electronics maintained the top spot with a 25% shipment share. SK hynix followed with 22%, and YMTC took third place by narrowly edging out Kioxia with a 14% share. Micron followed closely with 13%.
In the global NAND flash market, the proportion of server products is also increasing as artificial intelligence (AI) models transition from training to inference. In the second quarter of this year, enterprise SSDs accounted for 48% of total NAND bit shipments, significantly expanding from 26% a year ago. Consumer products faced supply shortages. As supply shortages intensified, industry revenue recorded an all-time high, increasing fivefold compared to the second quarter of 2025.
Counterpoint Research analyzed that such global market shifts have brought about a change in the competitive landscape among NAND suppliers. Samsung Electronics saw a decrease in NAND shipments as it prioritized the production of highly profitable DRAM under constrained production capacity. SK hynix increased its shipments driven by the performance of its subsidiary Solidigm, with Solidigm’s bit shipments surging 40% compared to the previous quarter.
YMTC benefited from the supply shortage, growing 22% compared to the same period last year and 5% compared to the previous quarter. The company is expanding its supply to Chinese firms while mass-producing 267-layer 3D NAND, and it is also advancing the development of NAND technology with over 300 layers based on its Xtacking architecture.
However, despite ranking third in shipments this quarter, YMTC remained in fifth place based on revenue. It lagged behind Micron and Kioxia because its product mix is still concentrated on consumer products, and its proportion of high-priced enterprise SSDs for data centers remains low.
Counterpoint Research stated, “YMTC plans to solidify its position as the global number three by transitioning its product mix to focus on eSSDs in the second half of this year,” and added, “Expanded financial support within China is also expected to back this transition.” The firm further noted, “Until 2027, industry profitability will be determined by what products are shipped and in what quantities, rather than who ships the most bits.”
