Kingdom Hearts (wt) is set in the world of the popular video game
Disney Channel and Disney+ have greenlit an anime series inspired by the popular video game franchise Kingdom Hearts and unveiled a teaser trailer for the CGI-animated Bluey movie.
Developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts (working title) was announced at Disney’s D23 fan event in Anaheim, California, over the weekend.
The series will feature a brand-new story that will expand on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world, the Mouse House said.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family.
“There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”
The project joins the growing slate of original animated series for Disney+, alongside series that include Dragon Striker, Phineas & Ferb and Big City Greens, plus the upcoming Messi & the Giants, Warrior Cats and Journey.
During D23, Disney also revealed more details about its forthcoming live-action animated hybrid series based on the classic character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and offered a first look at the Bluey film, based on the hit Australian series.
Helmed by creator, writer, co-director and executive producer Jon Favreau (Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, The Jungle Book), Oswald will premiere on February 17, 2027, exclusively on Disney+.
The series, which features Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Ryder Allen, Al Madrigal, Kathryn Hahn and Albert Brooks, is directed by Favreau, Jude Weng and Andrew R Jones. The executive producers are Favreau, Jones, Karen Gilchrist and John Bartnicki.
Fans at D23 were shown a clip from the series, which is set after an earthquake releases Walt Disney’s creation Oswald, who has been hidden away since the 1920s, and a middle-school boy and his friends try to help the cartoon rabbit navigate his way through the modern world.
Disney also showcased the new teaser trailer and poster for The Bluey Movie, offering a first look at the film which is based on the 2D animated series about a lovable, inexhaustible blue heeler cattle dog and her family.
The shift in animation style has proved controversial, with many fans on social media, YouTube and internet forums complaining about the move away from the show’s traditional style.
Due for release on August 6, 2027, The Bluey Movie is written and directed by creator Joe Brumm and produced by Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios, with distribution through Walt Disney Studios.
The film is produced by Amber Naismith and co-directed by Richard Jeffery. Joe Brumm also serves as executive producer, alongside Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson for Ludo Studio, and Justine Flynn for BBC Studios.
Dana Walden, president and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Company, opened the Disney Entertainment Showcase, where she presented a sneak peek of the upcoming sequel to The Simpsons film, releasing in theatres on September 3, 2027.
Disney also screened the teaser trailer for season two of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars spin-off series Ahsoka, which will premiere on January 20, 2027, exclusively on Disney+.
Elsewhere, Disney confirmed Marvel Television’s VisionQuest will launch exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, concluding the trilogy that began with 2021’s WandaVision and 2024’s Agatha All Along.
In related news, preschool series Marvel’s Spidey & his Amazing Friends has been greenlit for a seventh season on Disney Jr and Disney+.
The announcement was made by Alyssa Sapire, head of Disney Jr, original programming and strategy, during the Celebrate 65 Years of Marvel’s Spider-Man! panel at D23.
