Apple’s smallest desktop could get an unusual processor upgrade this fall. The 2026 Mac mini is reportedly moving to the basic M6 processor, but not the M6 Pro as would be expected.

Here’s everything the rumor mill says about Apple’s next Mac mini.

Why the 2026 Mac mini matters more than ever

The Mac mini desktop offers Apple’s Mac experience at the lowest price without sacrificing performance. Powered by Apple silicon, the compact computer is one of the best values in Apple’s lineup.

And the Mac mini found a surprising new audience thanks to the AI boom. Developers, researchers and hobbyists increasingly use it as an inexpensive platform for running local large language models (LLMs), taking advantage of Apple’s unified memory architecture and speedy, energy-efficient processors. High-end configurations with large amounts of RAM can run surprisingly capable AI models without relying on cloud services.

Mac mini: M6 for everyone, M5 Pro for power users

The littlest macOS desktop will get even more powerful this fall, with a widely expected processor boost. The current version is still on the M4 processor, but its replacement supposedly isn’t going to the M5 chip. The entry-level Mac mini will instead move directly from the M4 to the M6, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

The upcoming chip will be made with TSMC’s cutting-edge 2-nanometer process node to deliver significant leaps in CPU core performance and energy efficiency.

So far, all normal. What is unusual about the processor upgrade is the desktop won’t also get the more powerful M6 Pro as an option. That version of the chip supposedly isn’t coming at all, as Apple is jumping to the M7 family early. As a result, the high-end variant of the 2026 Mac mini will instead supposedly be powered by an M5 Pro.

There’s a precedent. The Mac Studio can be configured with an M4 Max or an M3 Ultra. It doesn’t include an M4 Ultra because that chip variant was never released.

For everyday users, the M6 should bring improved CPU performance, faster graphics and a more capable Neural Engine for Apple Intelligence features. The M5 Pro, meanwhile, is expected to deliver substantially more CPU and GPU cores, greater memory bandwidth and support for larger memory configurations for developers, video editors and other professionals.

In 2024, Apple radically redesigned the Mac mini, shrinking it considerably. Anyone hoping for another dramatic makeover this fall is likely to be disappointed.

But that’s hardly bad news. The current Mac mini is widely regarded as one of Apple’s best industrial designs, packing professional-grade performance into a chassis barely larger than an Apple TV.

Launching 2026 Mac mini into RAMageddon

The M6/M5 Pro Mac mini is rumored to debut this fall along with macOS Golden Gate as the first hardware update to the desktop since the M4 version in 2024. Apple traditionally unveils new Macs in October or November after introducing the latest iPhones in September.

That said, those making a purchase might face lengthy wait times. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently warned that “supply constraints in the September quarter” will reduce the company’s ability to produce Macs.

That’s a reference to RAMageddon, a worldwide shortage of DRAM and NAND chips caused by the AI boom and massive buildout in data centers by Google, OpenAI, Meta and others.

As a result, customers could find it particularly difficult to get their hands on the 2026 Mac mini configured with large amounts of RAM and storage. Ordering early is recommended.

Will prices go up?

Pricing remains one of the biggest unanswered questions about the M6/M5 Pro Mac mini.

Ordinarily, Apple would leave prices unchanged during a routine “chip-and-ship” processor refresh like this one. But soaring memory costs have fueled speculation that at least some Mac models could become more expensive this year.

But the company already raised the cost customers have to pay for the M4 version. The base Mac mini configured with 16GB/256GB costs $799, after a price hike in June. That’s $200 more than the original starting price.

And consider that the cost of memory chips continues to rise. If Apple absorbs these higher component costs on the new model, the 2026 Mac mini could keep its current starting price. If not, customers will end up paying more for the same compact desktop with faster Apple silicon.
