NVIDIA has officially released its native GeForce NOW application for Linux after months of beta testing. The launch brings improved performance, stability and desktop integration, while new server-side optimizations target lower-latency Frame Generation and higher frame rates in demanding games. Flatpak distribution also simplifies installation and future updates for Linux users.

Key takeaways
  • Native GeForce NOW support is now available for Ubuntu 24.04 and later.
  • NVIDIA has launched an official Flatpak repository for installation and updates.
  • Cloud-side changes improve DLSS Frame Generation responsiveness at 60 and 120 FPS.
  • Performance members receive additional CPU resources in select demanding games.
  • Nine games, including the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo, join the service.
Linux app graduates from beta

The Linux client has moved to a full release following months of community feedback. NVIDIA says the final version focuses on performance, stability and general polish, while officially supporting Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and newer releases. Although Ubuntu is the supported configuration, the application may also work on other distributions where its dependencies and desktop environment are compatible.

The new official Flatpak repository gives users another way to install the client without relying on a traditional distribution package. It also provides a more consistent path for receiving future application updates, which should be particularly useful for Linux users running different distributions.

Cloud optimizations target latency

The larger performance changes occur on NVIDIA’s servers rather than on the client itself. The company has optimized cloud-based DLSS Frame Generation to make streamed games feel more responsive, with the effect expected to be most noticeable at 60 or 120 frames per second and 1440p or 4K resolutions.

Frame Generation can increase perceived smoothness, but streaming adds network and encoding delays that local gaming does not. NVIDIA’s update is therefore aimed at reducing the responsiveness penalty associated with cloud rendering, helping mouse movements and camera pans feel more immediate. No user-side configuration or application update is required for these improvements.

Performance members get more CPU headroom

NVIDIA is also applying server software adjustments for Performance members. In select CPU-intensive games, the changes are designed to increase frame rates and improve consistency when the cloud system is handling demanding simulation or gameplay workloads.

The upgrade is automatic and comes at no additional cost. Actual results will vary by game, subscription tier, network quality and the user’s distance from a GeForce NOW data center, but the server-side approach means existing Linux hardware can benefit without a local GPU or CPU upgrade.

More ways to play across devices

GeForce NOW renders games remotely, allowing users to stream supported titles from libraries connected through services such as Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox and Ubisoft. NVIDIA says the catalog includes more than 2,000 PC games, including titles that can be difficult or impossible to run locally on Linux because of anti-cheat or compatibility restrictions.

The service is also being promoted for Chromebooks, Macs, laptops, Steam Deck systems and mobile devices. Eligible new Chromebook and Chromebook Plus owners can use Chromebook Fast Pass to receive one year of GeForce NOW with priority access and no advertisements.

Nine games join the library

This week’s additions include:

  • Car Wash Simulator
  • Pax Autocratica
  • Clawed
  • Hell Let Loose: Vietnam
  • Sandustry
  • Cat Mail Co.
  • Misery
  • Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo
  • Pratfall

For Linux gamers, the release expands access to high-end GeForce RTX-powered gaming without requiring a Windows installation or a dedicated gaming PC. However, the experience remains dependent on a reliable, low-latency internet connection and ownership or access to supported games.
