Route 2: North to Whale Cave and Fissures

Typical dive times range from 45 to 55 minutes, with depths generally reaching 30 to 35 metres. Because fewer divers head north, the area often feels noticeably less crowded, allowing marine life to behave more naturally.

The deeper cave sections are one of the best places to look for grouper, while octopus are frequently spotted tucked into rocky crevices along the wall. Keep an eye on the smaller details too, as the reef here rewards divers who slow down and take their time.

The additional depth means careful gas planning and close attention to your no-decompression limits are essential. Remember that you’ll still need enough air for the return journey through the tunnel, so plan your turnaround point conservatively rather than pushing your limits.

Route 3: South to Azure Reef and Blue Hole Exit

If you want to experience two of Gozo’s signature dive sites in a single dive, this is the route to choose. Designed for experienced Advanced Open Water divers, it follows the reef south after leaving the tunnel before continuing towards Azure Reef and finishing at the famous Blue Hole.

Expect a dive lasting around 50 to 60 minutes with maximum depths between 35 and 40 metres. Along the way you’ll encounter some of the richest marine life around Dwejra, with colourful damselfish and wrasse constantly moving across the reef, while scorpionfish blend almost invisibly into the rocks below. Schools of barracuda are regularly seen in season, and lucky divers may even encounter amberjacks cruising through the blue water.

Unlike the previous two routes, this is a one-way dive. Once you continue towards the Blue Hole, returning through the Inland Sea tunnel isn’t practical. That means you’ll either need a buddy to relocate equipment between entry and exit points or, more commonly, support from a local dive centre. Many operators include equipment transport as part of guided dives, but it’s worth confirming this when booking rather than assuming it’s included.

For experienced divers, this route offers the greatest variety of scenery, marine life, and underwater topography, making it one of the most rewarding dives on Gozo.

Marine Life: What to Look For and Where

One of the great rewards of diving the Inland Sea is that the marine life changes dramatically depending on where you are in the dive. Moray eels often reveal only their heads from cracks and crevices in the reef, while octopus can be found tucked away in holes throughout the rocky landscape. The reef wall attracts larger visitors.
