Australian UFC champ Alex Volkanovski says he might add a new martial art to his arsenal in order to beat Yair Rodriguez in his featherweight championship unification bout in Las Vegas this weekend.

Volkanovski, 34, is returning to his preferred weight class at UFC 290 after narrowly missing out on the 155lb title against pound-for-pound world No.3 Islam Makhachev five months ago.

He is attempting to secure his fifth successful defence of his featherweight title as he takes on dangerous Mexican challenger Rodríguez.

The former concreter from Wollongong is known for surprising opponents by using their own preferred martial arts against them - and with the next challenger it's no different.

'Taekwondo Volk is going to be in full force at International Fight Week,' Volkanovski revealed to Daily Mail Australia.

Rodriguez, who is a black belt in Taekwondo, is known for his flashy and unpredictable striking - but the Aussie says he sees holes in his game.

'There's definitely things I can see that I will take advantage of,' said Volkanovski. 

'He's so dangerous because of how unpredictable he is - it's not careless - but that unpredictable and crazy style makes him dangerous, but it's also why there's things that I can capitalize on.'

Volkanovski, who is on a 10-fight UFC winning streak at featherweight, is also predicting it will be an early night.

'I think I can finish this one early, I really do.

'I feel I'm too powerful and too strong - and I can see myself finishing him anywhere. Grappling, wrestling, ground and pound, striking. Anywhere.'

Earlier in the week, Volkanovski took advantage of arriving early in Vegas by attending the UFC Apex to watch a Fight Night event.

It was here that he bumped into Hollywood actor Mel Gibson.

'He said he's a big fan,' revealed Volkanovski.

'He said he appreciates excellence in any craft. Something like that. He said he will be there watching this weekend - so I'm looking forward to it.'

'The Great' has also forged a friendship with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and mentioned that he might might meet up with him when the event was over.

Should Volkanovski win against Rodriguez on Sunday, he will almost certainly secure himself at a second shot at UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev - and a chance at double-champ status.

But first he has to take care of business with Rodriguez.

'Obviously I've gotta do my thing. Make sure I win, so I can celebrate,'he said.

'There's an after-party at [Las Vegas nightclub] XS - Shaquille O'Neal will be DJing, so that's going to be really cool.'
