Australian UFC fighter Alexander Volkanovski is anticipating a cautious approach from rival Islam Makhachev ahead of UFC 284 in Perth on Sunday.

Volkanovski, 34, is seeking to become a double champion across two weight divisions - featherweight and lightweight.

And despite being on home soil, the man who has tasted defeat just once in his decorated career remains a $3.75 outsider with the TAB.

Not that 'The Great' is too concerned.

'I'm planning on going to war,' he told News Corp. 'So let's see who can last early on and go again in the later rounds.'

Volkanovski went onto label Makhachev, 31, a 'very calculated fighter who doesn't take unnecessary risks', hence his fight forecast.

Russian Makhachev, whose career record is an impressive 23-1, is a renowned grappler and wrestler.

He dismissed Volkanovski's mind games, revealing his ruthless intention from the outset.

'Honestly, I want to knock him out,' he said.

'I want to show people my striking. He (Volkanovski) is a short guy, and I really believe I can knock him out.'

Aussie boxer Tim Tszyu has no doubt his fellow countryman will get the job done in the Octagon.

'He is a beast,' Tszyu declared. 'And No. 1 pound for pound (in the sport) for a reason.

'He's not only smashing it up right now, but has all the tools required to stay the best fighter in the UFC.'
