Gotham FC made history Wednesday night, defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 in the inaugural Queens Classic at Citi Field.   

The event became the first National Women's Soccer League match played in New York City and the first women's sporting event ever held at the ballpark.   

Rose Lavelle scored the game's lone goal in the first half as Gotham earned a victory in a rematch of last year's NWSL championship game, which Gotham also won 1-0.   

The club announced a sellout crowd of 42,175, setting a record for attendance at a women's sporting event in New York City.   

Citi Field was transformed from a baseball stadium into a soccer venue for the occasion, drawing fans from across the region.   

"It's incredible right, like we've never witnessed this before. I've never been in such a huge venue, and to think it's all for Gotham? Go bats. Love it," fan Melissa Naud said. 

"This is all about the celebration of women and how far they're come —women's sports, everyone should be watching women's sports," Liz Kelley said.   

Some fans also got to arrive hours before kickoff for "Footy Fest," a pregame celebration outside the stadium. 

The match took place during the final week of the Men's World Cup, helping capitalize on a summer of soccer.   

"For New York, this is the city of champions. Gotham won last year, we just had the Knicks win the 'chip, I think it's big all around," fan Jacqui Gonzalez said. 

Earlier this month, the club announced it will begin playing home games at Etihad Park, located next to Citi Field, in 2028. Gotham currently plays its home matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.
