NJ Transit said it had about 25,000 riders, a few thousand more than Saturday’s game. Many were last-minute buyers.
Passengers riding New Jersey Transit to the second World Cup game at MetLife Stadium lined up on 32nd Street even before 11 a.m. for the 3 p.m. game.
That street closed, causing some inconveniences for drivers on 7th Avenue as passengers crossed to Penn Station. But it made it easier for ticket-holders.
“Knowing there’s going to be a ton of traffic,” said soccer fan Jim Winkler. “So, like, bus or driving or Uber would be tough. So, hoping we could do the train. So, you know, this process has been easy.”
NJ Transit said it had about 25,000 riders, a few thousand more than Saturday’s game. Many were last-minute buyers.
“Today; it was an impulse buy,” said soccer fan Jim Fostun. “It’s just easier. It’s going to bring us back. So that’s nice.”
Many expected the overlap of commuters and soccer fans to cause chaos at Penn, but regular NJ Transit commuter service restarted at 2 p.m. And area workers said there were only slight inconveniences.
“I can take a bus to go home right from over here. So now it’s kind of blocked off. But besides that, it’s alright,” said Leonel Lopez, who works near Penn Station. “I mean, compared to last week with the Knicks, like, honestly, this is kind of, this is nothing.”
“I thought it would be a lot more crowded,” said Michael Rivera, who works near Penn. “The shops around have a bit more people, but that’s about it.”
Over at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, most of the 12,000 people taking the host committee’s shuttle buses were well on their way. But the closure of 41st Street to allow those buses easy access to the tunnel from the Port Authority, and the closure of the length of 42nd Street, had cab drivers frustrated.
“Normal day, it’s moving,” said yellow cab driver MD Misum. “Today, very bad traffic because of road closed. We’re waiting very long time for passengers.”
The mayor said Tuesday was a gridlock alert day. The real test is next Monday, when the match starts at 8 p.m. and evening commuters and the outbound MetLife traffic overlap.
