Michael Doret's logo is still worn by countless fans as the Knicks seek their first championship since 1973.
You may not know Michael Doret by name, but there's a good chance you've seen his work.
He has drawn and designed covers for KISS. He was the brains behind the art and graphics for several Disney movies. He has five Time magazine covers in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
But he told NY1 what will likely go down as the biggest job he's ever had: creating the current logo for the New York Knicks.
"It's very meaningful to me." he said. "And it's that acceptance by New York of me that, it just makes me very proud."
Back in 1991, the NBA called asking if Doret wanted to redesign his hometown team's logo, which hadn't been updated in nearly 30 years.
It was a job he said he accepted instantly.
Despite some other graphic designers and artists doing their work on computers at that point, Doret said he did pretty much everything by hand.
He created several designs that he sent to the NBA, including ones featuring the Empire State Building.
“But in the end, they, they nixed it. No pun intended,” he said, adding that he believes that had to do with getting the rights to using the iconic building.
In the end, he said the league was drawn to a design featuring a triangle behind a basketball, with "Knicks" in blockhead above it.
“It's almost like a subconscious thing that I kind of follow,” Doret said.
He said his mindset with that design was how to recreate the logo that had been used — but in his way.
The team also ended up using a logo he created, inspired by the old subway token, as an alternative jersey.
Doret lives in Los Angeles now, but he grew up near Coney Island, and frequently visited Times Square, which established permanent imprints on his work ever since.
“I would be staring at all the incredible banners, and sign paintings, all the painted rides and, the colors were just incredible, very bright,” he recalled.
And now, none more bright or important to the city than the image that takes center court at Madison Square Garden.
His logo is still worn by countless fans as the Knicks seek their first championship since 1973.
