"This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit," the agency said.
A sea of die-hard Knicks fans decked out in orange and blue watched Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals at official Madison Square Garden watch parties just outside the arena, but that will not be happening for Game 3 on Monday.
President Donald Trump will be attending Game 3 of the finals, where the Knicks are taking on the Spurs.
A statement from the NYPD explained the decision. They wrote, "There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only."
“This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit," they added. "We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4."
One fan told NY1, “I'm not happy about it, especially because, you know, I mean, why should they not have a party just because the president's going to be here?”
Rami Ziyadeh attended the official watch parties for Games 1 and 2.
"I love being here," he told NY1. “The environment is great. The fans, the support. It's like, uniting all of New York.”
He plans to watch Monday’s game at a local bar.
“It was really sad, considering the tickets are like, what? Lowest tickets are like $7,000. And watching it here with a group of people and having a great time is always fun,” he said.
Fiach McHugh Hill, the managing partner of Avenida, which is a block away from the Garden, says whether or not there is a watch party, his bar is already booked to full capacity.
“If anything, it'll impact us positively, as in it's gonna give us more people who are gonna wanna come into the bar," he said. "But like I said, we're at capacity already, so it doesn't really, I wanna say it doesn't affect us that much."
But McHugh Hill says he feels bad for die-hard fans who like to watch near the arena.
There will be other watch parties happening all over the city, including at Wollman Rink and the Brooklyn Bowl. For those lucky enough to have tickets to the game, there will be enhanced security and a strict no-bag policy.
Phillip, who travelled all the way from Germany just to attend Games 3 and 4, bought tickets two weeks ago.
“I think extra security is always nice, always good. People feel safe, then they can have a good time,” he said.
While he is ecstatic to be inside the Garden, he also feels bad for fans who can’t watch outside.
“I hope there will be another venue where they can go and celebrate and have a good time and support the Knicks,” he said. “They need everyone to come out and to support them. This is bigger than the World Cup."
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and the World Cup comes every four years, but the Knicks and the finals didn't happen for 27 years, and I hope it will happen more often, but this beats every World Cup a hundred times over," he added. "Let’s go Knicks!”
Ticket holders are being encouraged to arrive two hours before tipoff because of enhanced security.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch is expected to hold a security briefing to address concerns and discuss strategy Monday morning ahead of the game.
