The World Cup kicks off in more than three weeks, and in New York — just like in all 16 cities where matches will be played this summer — security is top of mind.

The FBI is one of several agencies that were grouped together by the White House to handle security for the tournament. Amit Kachhia-Patel is the special agent in charge of the mission services division at the FBI’s New York office.

“Our focus is on threats, however they may manifest themselves, so we’ve got a counterterrorism division here within the office, a cyber division here in the office, and so through our own investigations we’re monitoring threats,” he told NY1.

He leads a task force of more than 400 officers from different state and local agencies.

“We provide SEAR ratings, so threat ratings to events based on size and scope, and so this is going to be a SEAR 1 event, which means that we will have a joint operations center stood up 24/7,” Kachhia-Patel said.

The joint operations center, also known as the JOC, will include members of NCIS, the FAA, the DOD and more. They’ll monitor the matches in real time, including on social media, according to Kachhia-Patel.

“We’ll be able to have footage of the different fan sites, just as an example, to be able to see if there’s any kind of anomalous activity happening there, monitoring of social media for any potential threats,” he said.

Coinciding with the World Cup this summer are America’s 250th anniversary and Sail250 — when 60 tall ships from more than 20 countries will arrive to the Port of New York and New Jersey for six days.

“Sail250 brings a totally different dimension into our security posture,” Kachhia-Patel said. “People like to get a really good view through the use of drones… if there is a drone above a large gathering of people, we would look to mitigate that drone and see who’s flying that drone and see if it poses any threat to the public.”

He said the bureau relies on its years of experience, taking best practices learned from similar events — like the U.N. General Assembly.
